No it should be smoth at 800 rpm mine Idles at 750 in D and 850 in N (93 auto) and is smooth - check Plugs, wires and compression - un-even compression across rotor faces will cause rough idle.

Change plugs every 15K. A "new" crate motor, you say? You shouldn't have re-used old plugs if you did. Also your injectors may be dirty (run SeaFoam through the TB), or from the install your O2 sensor may be bugged, MAP bugged, TPS bugged, or you may have a vacuum leak.

Yeah, it should be a nice and gentle idle at 800. I would look into that

How rough is rough? If it's just slight hiccups every few seconds that's pretty normal if the motor is new. It should go away ~ 1000 miles if you break it in properly. If you're running plugs w/ a heat rating of 9 all around, that's also a possible culprit - again we're talking SLIGHT hiccups. And if you're running an aftermarket ECU, you may be just running a little too rich at idle. Not too big of a deal.

Now if you have a VERY rough idle, check your vacuums and compression.

Mine idles at 1200rpm too. That's because I set it there. At night, when all my lights are on, my idle would drop by 300rpm. So it's perfect at 900rpm. If I turn on my rear defroster, it would drop another 100rpm. Man, I need to do something with my electrical problem. Probably need a capacitor or something. My battery shouldn't be the problem, since it's an Optima and I bought it last year. That thing should last me forever. Anyone know of where to find a capacitor for cheap? I don't want to spend $150 for some name brand capacitor when they sell it for less then $40 for a no name brand. Too bad I can't remember where to get it.

mine idles around 800, but it sometimes drops down to 600, and almost stalls, but it climbs back up. It's strange, i think i may have to raise my idle a tad bit.

Rough idle = problems, DK has got the right advice to start checking. I wish I could get 15K from a set of plugs.
The gap starts to erode noticeably at about 5 to 7K on the plats and can cause all kinds of rough running, difficult hot starting and hesitation. New plugs will make it VERY happy. Just like a two stroke motorcycle engine!

Very Minor hiccup at idle = normal "rotary rock". Just part of life and nothing to worry about.

Sounds like plugs or wires on the "rough" idle. As for the guys with the high idle... You have a problem worth looking into. Check to make sure you don't have any leaks in the intake air system. Check vacuum hoses for cracks or any that have come off. Just adjusting idle doesn't fix much. I doubt a screw turned itself down to raise the idle. For purposely raising idle to 1200 so the car won't stall with lights on is not good either. You might want to see if your electrical system is properly grounded, as pathetic as Pettit's free engine ground kit is, it actually helps sometimes and plus it's free... I assure you not all FDs have to be turned up so that we can turn our headlights on, capacitor is not the right answer. And the guy who has revving at idle, check your battery voltage, it may be a little low, if not, check plugs/wires. Good luck.

Thanks guyz, yeah that 's all it doing is hicups for a second. The car does ridle rough for like 2 seconds when i start up , like im starting a drag car, then it smooths like a stays around 800 and if i move up to around 1000 it completely stops. Thanks again , i just wnate to make sure that nothing major was wrong.

Ummm... I don't want to needlessly alarm you, but that's usually a very bad sign. The three times I've had that happen to me, compression on one of the rotors checked out low. Typically, your idle RPM should be going up w/ more electrical load and it shouldn't waver or dip. Does your car feel like it's going to stall when you push in the clutch pedal from say 4000RPM?

Get your compression checked. You should see at least 7,7,7 on both rotors.

My car has idling problems too. Sometimes it idles perfectly right at 800 rpms but then at other times it starts to idle roughly and the ECU has to keep revving the engine to keep it from stalling. Then after a while it settles at like 1000 rpms and seems fine. I never noticed this problem until after I installed my high-flow cat. I've had it tuned on the dyno but the problem didn't go away.
