I am attempting to sell a set of two FD wheels with M/T drag tires on them. One potential buyer is asking me if they are the light weight or the re-enforced version of the FD wheels.

They came off of a late build 94. Are there any markings or visual differences that I could use to decipher which version I have?

 

The re inforced wheels spokes are about 2.25" wide right where they meet the rim.

The non reinforced ones are about 2" wide where it meets the rim.

 

how much are you wanting for them?

 

Not the best picture but the one on the right is the reinforced wheel.

 

I believe only the '93s had the light weight wheels - they changed that in '94 when they saw the cracking problems.

Does anyone have any verification that the quoted statement is 100% true? And how common is this cracking problem?

 

My FD was built in 1992 (I bought it new in March 1993) and it came with the "reinforced" wheels. After I damaged one late in 1993, the "new" replacement wheel was a "lightweight" one. I'm more inclined to think that Mazda had two interchangable sources for wheels.

 

I agree with you. I think I've seen just as many cracked "reinforced" wheels as I have the "non-reinforced" wheels over the years. IMO, it just seems like two different sources for the wheels rather than one made specifically to be stronger.

Geez. I was off by a year - I meant it was built in 1991, and I bought it in March 1992.

 

I agree with all of this, but Mazda clearly didn't consider them to be perfectly equal. That's because I've not yet seen or heard of a car coming from Mazda with mixed set.

Personally I don't think it's a very big deal - just inspect them carefully before buying and always inspect them.

Considering that the backside appearance is quite different, that, in itself, would have caused some complaints, I'm sure, if they did mix them on any one car.
