Did someone try to break into my car?
Did someone try to break into my car?
I was going to unlock my door when my key would not go into the hole. I looked inside and there was two pieces of plastic in there. "shattered" i would describe. I cant take a picture of it now my camera is out of batteries..
So question is... is there any plastic in the lockset cylinder? If not, someone was trying to pick my door open..

It sounds like the plastic keyhole cover. That gets broken easily. I'm surprised yours lasted this long.
I can't remember where its at but there is a DIY fix...

I've had these break too. At first I thought it was attempted theft, but I soon learned that they break easily and often. I took the lock apart and made some replacements out of 22Ga stainless steel (cut & file). They should last the life of the lock--however, they don't light up.

so its supposed to light up? so I can see where the keyhole is in the dark? what would I be doing parking at a spot so dark anyways!
I've got a few threads on this somewhere....
There is a plastic flapper door that covers the keyway on the lock. It's to keep debris from getting in the lock, and it's plastic so you can see the keyhole light up at night.
It's VERY common for these to be broken. Just pull the lock cylinders off and take them to a locksmith - they can put brand-new ones in and clean the lock up for VERY cheap. I had both mine done for like $15, and that included getting 3 copied keys made.
Do NOT use WD-40 to lubricate a lock. Graphite is the correct lubricant for a lock. WD-40 will work for a while, but it's sticky, and dirt and dust sticks to it, making the lock even worse. Graphite is a dry lubricant. The locksmith will lubricate them with graphite - if you just need to clean your locks up, you can get graphite for locks at hardware stores, auto parts stores, Wal-Mart, etc.
There is a bulb on the driver's side lock - when the car is locked and you pull up on the handle, its supposed to illuminate the lock. But, many times the bulb is burnt out. I'm probably going to use an LED to replace my bulb - more solid state. I really don't use the feature, but I HATE having something broken on the car. I want everything as perfect as possible
