Did I Get Ripped Off?
I bought this from a place called Atkins Rotary off of ebay and I did not look at the price before I ordered. I don't mind if that is the price, I just want to make sure that is fair. Mine broke and I've had to glue it back together twice now.
Was there a better alternative I should have explored first?
Thanks!

how much did you expect new interior plastics to be? youve been around for a decade and dont know about atkins? they are one of the most fair companies out there.
you could have purchased used with the potential of being scammed or sold parts with the same issues you have.

That price is hard for me to miss. And for that a better alternative IMO would have been to PM Fritz Flynn or watch the parts for sale section for a decent used one. Buying from a tenured member here with decent feedback/history isn't that dangerous.
That said, many NEW interior parts such as that hood have become more difficult to find. Some are no longer available from MAZDA. If somebody like Ray @ Malloy has one, he may not have been much cheaper.

how come you never buy my stuff?
i looked up the meter hood for a 93 USA FD, and the part number is FD01-55-420E-00 Mazda USA currently has 16, with a list price of $489.62.
the 94-95 style is NLA, so price seems fair

This may be accurate, but I did call Ray at Malloy in April of 2014 and he had one available. I believe the price was $340 - $400 for both the face and the hood (you had to buy them together). You may want to give him a call to see if he does still have one in stock. I did not purchase it and decided to try gluing and sanding first.

I'm always surprised that people don't at least check the dealer first before buying on ebay, etc.
The part number specified in the auction = FD01-55-420E-00 which is the 93 finish version.
93 finish version of gauge face and hood = $373.16 brand new from Ray and Mazda Malloy
Quote is from today 6-5-14.
Sorry KehoeAutomotive

You didn't look at the price before you ordered it? Damn. The front part used is about $100 used and the hood is about $150, so $250 used vs $530 new? I purchased a used hood from fritz for $150, looked brand spanking new to me.

I did know about Atkins and knew they are a good company. That's why I ordered from them and did not look at the price. I actually did not order it actually, I asked one of my employees to order it for me and I told them I knew that company.
Looks like the price was high but I did not get ripped off. It's just an expensive piece of plastic. And that's what I was trying to find out. I am happy with Atkins and will use them again.
Next time I need a part I will call Ray at the Mazda Dealer. There are a few reasons why I sometimes prefer not to deal with the dealership but that is another thread for a different day.
Don't really think used is much of an option. I already have a used one where the screw mountings are cracked and will only get worse from having to R&R it multiple times for various repairs.
Thanks so much! I feel much better about my purchase.

Additionally, Ray warranties his parts from defect for 1 year and I've personally used this benefit to replace a new sunroof weather seal that split on me 4 months down the road. It was painless working with Ray to do the return.

I'd be interested in reading that thread if you ever get around to writing it. I can't think of one reason not to deal with Ray. I've done 30+ transactions with him and everyone has been flawless.

I have atleast 2 good 93 front gauge covers/bezels, I typically sell these for 125. I also have some 94 front covers for those interested. Have some beat up covers that are not pretty and may have some broken tabs that could be repaired etc... that will get the job done, CHEAP!

^Your welcome, but you earned it. 214 positives to 1 negative? On a forum? Seriously, my wife's the nicest person I know and she couldn't equal that!
Buying new is great if you can afford it. But $530 for a new hood/bezel, even Ray's price of $375 certainly makes it worth putting a little time into a used one for most. With some care and prep work, one could plasti-dip the bezel and match the OEM 93 panels damn-near perfectly. And since you can almost play rugby on that stuff, you'd never have to worry about scratches again.

And Fritz had a negative? Damn. Someone must have been a bit sensitive. I had a small disagreement and he made everything right on one transaction, and NUMEROUS great transactions. Him and Ray Crowe are my go-to guys for finding parts.

Agreed on the reconditioning via plasti-dip. Was considering doing this even though mine are in very good shape.

The negative was about a dude who listed a WTB for a PPF so that's what I sent him but apparently that wasn't the part he really needed and he wanted a refund. I was willing to return it less 20% restock and he felt that wan't cool and wanted a full refund less my shipping cost.
Had it been a smaller part no biggie but boxing and shipping a PPF is a PIA, not to mention the guy had a terrible attitude.
