did i buy a dodgy greddy temp gauge

hey guys just testing out a used greddy water temp gauge i just bought. Its the model with the 2 ***** n the bottom with warn and memory on it. ATM ive rigged it up using a 12v motorcycle battery i have. Ive connected the black to negative obviously and left the yellow (warning option wire out)

red white and orange have all been connected to battery positive, the gauge lights up but it wont move even when i dip the sensor into boiing water.

obviously this setup isnt perfect but what would make it not work!!!! if i can id rather get it working outside of the car so i dont have some cut up radiator hoses and find out i have a water temp gauge that doesnt work.

cheers in advance..

OHH where does that yellow wire go?? done a search and theres nothing. I cant read my manuel cos its in Japanese!!!

Good question. I do believe the Greddy sensors don't need to be grounded, since they're 2-wire sensors.

Here's the wiring for the gauge -

http://www.greddy.com/tech/GAUGEWIRING.pdf

The red is constant, orange is 12v switched, and white is illumination. In an install in the car, you do need to wire it up properly - you can't just hook the red to switched power. That said, might want to hook the red wire up first, then the orange, so it would duplicate what happens when you start the car.

The sensors and wiring are VERY hardy - I've owned a pile of Greddy gauges in the past, and they're well-built. But, when getting a used one, there's always a possiblity of getting a bum steer.

If you can, take a pic of the gauge, wiring, and sensor - I can tell you if it's all the original equipment or someone tried to rig up some other sensor.

im pretty sure its all stock greddy.. It says it was working in the car when it was removed. Ive tried grounding the sensor to the the negative and it still doesnt work.. seems strange.

that would make sense if the red is 12V and the orange is illumination.

orange isnt illumination, white is illumination!!!!

orange is the ignition source.. very strange that it wont work when connected to a battery since 12v constant and ignition are identical except they come on at different times.

I believe the gauges will work hooked up to a battery. Just hook the red wire up first (with ground connected, of course) then hook up the orange and see what you get.

Might also be worth checking the resistance of the water temp sender. If it's open circuit or something weird you know you've got a problem there .

Of course, it could just be wanting to be in a car, and it will magically work in the car. I've seen weirder stuff .

ok i installed it in the car and it works!!! very strange,, ive plugged it into the hole just behind the cap on teh filler neck using a little adapter.. was driving around testing it today.

The highest i saw it was 110c or 230F,, this was during idle.

I havent done anymods to the cooling system at all. But i am thinking of the miata thermoswitch.

OHHH before i forget what should i set the warning light to come on at??
