definitive catback exhaust comparison?
definitive catback exhaust comparison?
With as much experimentation that has taken place in this community, I'm surprised there hasn't been a good catback exhaust comparison. If there has been, please point me to it!
It would be so easy. Put an RX-7 on the dyno, preferably with a downpipe and midpipe (otherwise the stock precat or cat could skew the results), and try 5-10 of the more popular exhuasts. Not 5 of the same style, but *different* styles. N1 canister type, RB dual tip, ATR, Greddy SP, PFS, etc.
I'd like to know the difference in weight of each of these, but more importantly (read: harder to determine) the difference in flow. I think the RB is one of the quietest but I want to know if it will hurt performance vs my existing setup.
Will someone please do this if it hasn't been done already? These cars have been around 10 years and I'm not aware of any such test.

yeah that would be great, just the other day my friend was researching CB's on his wrx and found a great site that compared hp, tq, db @ different rpms, cost, weight, and sizes (tip and piping) for about 8 popular cb's, not that all of that has to be included, just suggestions
Add the HKS carbon TI. Also would it be to much trouble to have sound clips along with the differant CB's? We could read the performance data and then click the audio file to hear all the action. That would be the f*cking ****. It would also make this the Ulitimate sound/exhaust thread. Sticky anyone?

Jason,
I suggest the pool of exhausts be fairly different, but include AT LEAST one Greddy with a decent sized muffler (SP or Power Extreme), the RB dual tip (the one a lot of us are curious about), and an N1 canister-style exhaust. Most other exhausts closely match one of these 3 styles. Be sure to test a stock catback too!! If you can throw more styles in after these, great, the more the better.
There is no point in comparing several exhausts that are basically the same by design (for example, all the tiny canister style exhuasts) since their performance will all be VERY similar.

that would be very informative and as someone said, good for a magazine article...
to start i believe:
dual n1 > rb dual > stock > dual n1 silenced
BTW: my n1s is for sale. too freaking loud with midpipe

I think this would be an excellent idea for the RX Tuner Magazine. I have a feeling they have already had this idea (I hope). A db comparison would be really nice too. I have seen tests like this already, in the Japanese RX-7 Magazine.
