The Day the FD Arrived!
Can readers share that moment when you knew you were in the same league as every other so-called sports cars. What am mean if could remember when these cars came out the market was still being ruled by American Muscle. With the likes of the Mustang GT,Camaroc Iroc Z or the Buick Grand Nationals. Is easy today for some to dismiss those comments but back in 93 the thinking was different.Interested in your views thanks,

FD was the first car to use sequential twin turbo. The 959 never used it on their production cars, it was parallel.
But with good turbo technology, sequential is a thing of the past.

The 1986-1988 Porsche 959 was the world first sequential twin turbo and all 337 can with them; and I would never class this supercar a "production" car. however, you are correct that Porche did not use the sequential setup in its production cars, i.e. 911 Turbos. The Supra did come out after Mazda with its own sequential system on a higher priced car.
Good turbo technology of today not the '90's.
"With recent advancements in turbocharger design, and reductions in lag this has made possible, sequential twin turbo systems have fallen out of favor because they are seen as unnecessarily costly and complex"

The MKIV also used the seq twin system. So i wouldnt say the FD was the first. Maybe they were part of the first to do it.
Speaking of which, i remember when the MKIV's were at the dealers.
I remember because my sister bought her corolla in 1998 and i remember those cars being there, there were ALOT of them too lol
Funny how it felt like yesterday. Now they're all time pieces lol
Dont remember the FD's at dealers though.

I drove an R1 the first day they arrived in Houston back in '92. I was going back on Saturday to order a CYN but that Friday, my company closed three plants and cut our corporate office by 2/3's , I postponed that purchase. Later in '94 I ordered an R2 though Mazda Motorsports after being told '95's may never get built. car came in from Japan in '95 .. I was promoted to VP before the car arrived. I should have purchased the orginal in '92 would have gotten promoted sooner ..hahaha.

Forget the Supra.
The Toyota Aristo V had the 2JZ-GTE before the Supra.
Aristo came out in 1991 !!!

Pretty much no one uses sequential anymore as turbo technology has vastly improved.
Nissan especially never jumped on the sequential bandwagon.
And to the guy who said Aristo V : The Cosmo started production in 1990 and had 13B-RE and 20B-REW Sequential turbos and set the precedent in the japanese automotive industry. The FD took off on their coat-tails and beat the Supra as a "first" in the US market.

So i guess we are all wrong to an extent. But it's safe to assume Mazda beat toyota and subaru to the punch as far as japanese makers go.

Actually sequential turbos are making a comeback. It is a great way to boost the low and highe end output of a small displacement motor. Check out some of the new engines from the Euro makers - BMW particularly. BMW has a 4 cylinder sequential twin turbo motor. I forget if its a diesel or gas powered.
Really the 80s FC Turbo II was the car that put the RX7 on the map against the big name, higher powered cars. When the FC Turbo II was introduced, it compared very favorably with the Porsche 944 Turbo and the Mustang and Camaros of the day.

I believe its production in the 335D. It was actually a twin sequential turbo inline 6 (not 4)

The VR4 had a 4g63-t (single turbo) and a Twin Turbo Non-sequential V6.
Subaru had a sequential setup twin turbo boxer on their older legacy. That's the only other japanese car i can think of.
The 335 has compound turbos which is different than sequential. Boost Logic is making a compound turbo setup for the twin turbo supra.

I was 12 when the FD came out so I don't remember noticing them until a good 5 years later. And they were way beyond my price range at 17. haha
Ganesh, PM me some info on R32 GT-R's. I had a guy offer me an outrageous price to buy my FD, so I have some ideas tumbling around upstairs.
