Custom gauge install
the tach is only 1.1" deep so I didnt have to modify the back side of the cluster for it aside from making a hole for the wires to go through, but I did have to open up the hole in the original black bezel with a dremel but not by much... it was really close to being an exact fit. The Autometer gauges however are a little deeper and required some heavy modification to the back side of the cluster housing (since both are mechanical) and they're 2 1/16" which I guess would be 52mm...
oh the back side is not exactly a work of art..... good thing nobody will ever see it! ... I might take a pic of it later... The white harness that supplies the oem oil and temp signal is no longer used but since it also supplies the ground, I spliced the original harness and manually attached the ground to the oem fuel gauge so it'll still work.. along with the light.

man I gotta plug Speedhut here, the price was great (about $190 shipped) and they have a ton of options (I passed most of them up) and its about as close to a '99 spec tach that I could find without being the real deal. Built in programmable sequential shift light is pretty tight as well...

well out of the nine previous rx-7's I've owned 6 of them I equipped with mech oil pressure gauges, the only failure I ever had was in a 1st gen with a bridgeported 12a where I used the dinky plastic line supplied with the gauge, and it was because I overtightened the compression fitting on the back of the gauge which caused the ferrule to slightly split the line, over a two hour drive it spit one drop of oil on my pant leg. Since then I only use braided line and AN fittings and have had no more failures. If one was really paranoid you could use a firewall isolator, but I have much faith in my work.
I'm not trying to say that is for everyone, but I've had my trial and errors and I use what works for me. I'm sure over my history of 7 ownership (12 years and counting) I've done plenty of modifications that many would scoff at but were successful and reliable in operation.
Now I'm going back out to my shed to finish my single turbo conversion that I'm fabricating out of mud and sticks!

...not quite 50 bucks but an isolator nontheless
glad you posted this...my tach just started acting crazy on the way to chris' memorial meet.
bounces all over the place even at constant RPM.
looks like this might be my next project!
