Custom coolant temp warning

I don't want to add another gauge to my interior, but I would like to know if the coolant temp exceeds the normal range. The stock warning lights come on too late. Temperature switches are available to turn on an accessory via a relay (fans, for example) when a specific temp is reached. So, I want to use one of these switches to turn on a signal light that can be placed discreetly on the dash. Has anyone else done this?

Have you read/heard about linearizing the stock temp gauge? It won't be a light like you're looking for, but it will be a more accurate gauge and will remain stock looking.

this should get you to the sight with the linearization mod, i highly recommend it. i have done this to two of my cars. the needle reads 170 at the bottom white line and 225 on the top white line. the range in between is linear. the whole process takes a couple of hours but is well worth it if you want to keep your interior stock looking. while you are at it change the fan temp switch to a lower one, my fans come on at 190 with a 180 tstat. the miata switch will work but i think it is still too high ~210. its easiest to find a switch with the temp you want and drill and tap the tstat housing to accept the fan switch

I did try the temp gauge linearization on my old FD. I wasn't satisfied with it at all. The needle would not make it to the middle range. Even adjusting the potentiometer did not help. Followed the directions closely, but builder error could be responsible.

Yes, this is the obvious solution, but as stated above I do not want to add another gauge to the interior of this particular car.
