whats your goal? Its going to be hard to beat an off the shelf design if you are just trying to cut costs. Most of the custom jobs I have seen over the years at least started with a metal AST from a vendor.

If I've heard some aftermarket pettit ast's warping a bit at where the rad cap mounts causing pressure leaks. I would almost guarantee this problem will happen with cheap ast's.

Look on the 3rd gen For Sale section, i got a used custom made ast from someone going to ls1 for cheap, 50 bucks shipped, looks pretty good, altho it does have an extra nipple on it, lol.

Megan is not really a crappy brand. What do you mean they warp? Like the metal rim looses its shape and leaks?

Hades : Idk what you mean by "Defined was also looking at making some too..? "
Defined Auto Works. The make good stuff.

Yep, I've heard atleast 2 or 3 people say they've had an issue where the pressure cap makes a seal with the threaded rim due to the metal warping. Now I'm sure they've overheated their car, or who knows. Its not common, but its not unheard of either. Nowadays, most people actually go the AST Delete route, I found a used custom alum one for super cheap so I went that route.

There is a way to delete it and use a pressurized cap on the fill I believe but I would search for it.

The pettit unit isnt very sturdy. Mine warped. I replaced it with one from Tri Point Engineering. The Tri Point unit is made much better.

Don't do this, the coolant will not have anywhere to expand to once it makes it past your pressure cap. It will just pour out of the car instead of going to the coolant overflow tank like it should.

My AST blew with 38,000 miles on the original motor, so if yours is still working, I would suggest getting it replaced ASAP.

I went ahead and splurged(?) on the Knightsports AST from RHDJapan. It looks really nice and clean, especially compared to the ugly orange peel black ones that are available. It fits perfectly, looks nice, and reuses the stock AST cap.

Worth it IMO.
