Couple of Exhaust Fume Questions

First of all, I'm in Denver, and it has been pretty cold lately. I had a midpipe recently, but decided to re-install the cat due to boost spikes and excessive fumes. After install though, the exhaust fumes haven't been much better. I realize it takes a while for the cat to warm up to operating temps, and without an airpump, it's going to spell a little worse, but is that it? It still smokes quite a bit, stinks up the entire garage until it warms up. I haven't been driving it due to the slow, only running it every couple of days to keep fluids moving. I've got a Pettit ecu, so I assume it's simply running rich as well, and a pfc and tune will help out.

Second question, I haven't had any oil leaks that are significant enough to drip on the floor, but I noticed tonight a couple of black spots on my floor after a quick drive that seemed more like some exhaust soot, but they were centered under the car rather than under the exhaust tip. When I wiped them up, they had a little of an oily consistency. Any ideas? Like I said, it's mostly been sitting in one spot while running to warm up temps and then cools. I do this a couple of times a week.

Thanks for the input.

J

When you re-installed the cat, what did you do about the pipe that comes out of the side of the cat and routes to the air pump?

I'd suggest not starting it every couple of days. I'd change your schedule to once a week or once every 2 weeks. Eventually you may wind up flooding it if you overdo it.

Yes. If you don't run the airpump, you are still going to have exhaust fumes especially at startup and idle. Your cruising emissions will be less, but if you are looking to get rid of the starting/idle fumes you need the airpump along with a decent cat.

I did not re-install the air pump along with the cat, so that pipe is not connected with an air source.
At this point I am more concerned with the oily black soot I found under the car.

Thank you for your responses

Is it blocked off?

The air pump and the Air Control Valve direct fresh air to the exhaust ports at idle. a Pettit ECU with no air pump is going to have a lot of unburnt hydrocarbons at idle, and that's what you are smelling.

The air inlet on the cat should be blocked off if you aren't using an airpump. You can simply use the stock check valve which goes on that line if you don't have something else to block it.

...and (in case you haven't put it together yet) that is probably where the soot is coming from - exhaust gases from the exhaust blowing out that air inlet.
