Counter weight/ flywheel question

I am in the process of the auto to manual swap. The one thing that I cant get a good answer in all of the posts is about the counter weight.

If I get a OEM 5 speed flywheel and a OEM clutch do I take out the auto counter weight or leave it in? Are the manual and 5 speed counetr weights the same?

If I go light weight flywheel and it says it needs a counterweight can I use the auto one or do I need the aftermarket one.

I am thinking right now of going with a lighter one and a bit of an upgraded clutch kit.

I just cant understand why they are different? A counter weight to me needs to do one thing "counter weight" to balance out mass in rotation. Thanks.

I think i figured it out. The oem manual flwheel has the counter weight built in.

Is this correct?

For manual cars the counter weight is built in to the stock flywheel. There is no way you would be able to install both when doing the swap. If you get an aftermarket flywheel, you keep the auto counterweight so you can bolt up the flywheel.

Edit: Yes you figured it out. I typed this before you posted your response.

if your doing the swap your self I think u better off leaving the auto counter weight and getting a light weigh flywheel. Unless you have the right tools that flywheel nut isnt so easy to remove. The light wheel flywheel will be a direct bolt on no mods or hassles.

Stock flywheels are horrid on these cars. If you enjoy an engine that revs slooooooooooooooow then install it. Otherwise, a light flywheel yields a huge performance benefit, especially in the lower gears.

My clutch has started slipping so I'm going to replace clutch and thought I may as well do a chromoly flywheel while I'm at it.
First time doing clutch on my FD, and discovered I need a counterweight, I knew nothing of this untill I searched, the name makes it obvious on what it does.
How would I know what weight to get and where to source one etc?
