corvette owner wants to race

this guy wants to race he has a stock 2000 hard top auto corvette. he says he will take me off the line and if i did beat him it would be at the last few feet of the 1/4 mile. i think i can win and i thik i could beat him out off the hole too.

with these mods do you think i will be able to beat the vett?

pettit intake
greddy piping for stock intercooler
down pipe
greddy pe exhaust
act s/s clutch
tein ha coilovers
m2 traling arms and toe links

i ran a 13.165 with these mods plus a 9.5 lb flywheel, i'm running the stock flywheel now and think the car is a little slower.

What boost will you be running? It will be close--c5s are no joke, and he can just stomp on the gas with that slushbox.

Why in sam hill did you switch from a lw to a stock flywheel?

shifting requires less conscious effort, and its easier. less revs required.. etc. some people like convenience better than acceleration. (not me )

I raced a guy in a modified c5 6 speed and walked away from him. From 40 he could not even keep up I have pretty much the same mods as you except i have a power fc. Oh yea i was only running .5 bar. Corvettes are weak. Any health running 7 will leave one in the dust.

i am running stock boost, i blew my clutch and the flywheel was too chewed up to reuse it. i need the car asap so i couoldnt wait for the insirt for the flywheel to come in the mail. i miss my 9.5 lb flywheel bad. after this clutch goes i will neve go back to the stock flywheel.
after christmas i'll have a front mount intercooler a power fc and high flow cat. then i know i'll handle most corvettes easily.

He may get the jump on you ,but by 2nd/3rd gear you should leave him.
I raced a C5 with 287 gears and slushbox and thats was the outcome with similar mods, see sig.

ummm no they aren't. The C5s run low 13s out of the box and the word around is that the new Z06s can run 11s on just DRs. I raced a C5 6 speed with an exhaust, intake, and something done to the MAF from a 2nd gear roll up to about 130. I pulled him 1.5-2cars I'd say. But it was difficult to judge going over 100 and glancing into your rear view mirror really fast to see where he was.

I know this sounds counter intuitive, but your advantage will be down low, rather that at the end of a 1/4 mile, or from a higher-speed roll.

I have a friend with a C6 6-speed, and this was proved in many different benchmark races, with various changing mods.

RX7s can compete w/ higher horsepower/torque cars like C5s because they are light weight. The advantage that the light weight gives you diminishes the faster you are rolling.

For best results, try getting him to race you from a low-speed roll... just fast enough to eliminate the launch factor... 1st gear, 10-20 mph... just enough that your clutch is fully engaged. Good luck

why bother racing a guy who buys an auto? not that i'm good at shifting but still, an auto shouldn't belong in a sports car.

I know a guy with a red c5 vert auto.

I beat him. Over and OVER again.

Then he spent 16k on motor mods (all zo6 ****) and tuning.

Then I beat him again

Take it to him!!

Pop off your hoses for your turbo blow-by, when you get him on the line, juice it a little so he can hear the turbos flow, then make him your bitch!!

With a Corvett its all about how he can 60-foot you because that is all he will get. Making him a little nervous at the line might make him a little, not-so-perfect and then he is yours!!

So if your from a roll, you will get him if you can get boost. From a stand-still, it will be the best driver because the cars are pretty evenly matched with a few mods on each. The RX7 is just much more intimidating then any Corvett that I have seen.

AIRN, can you give us more feedback on the light flywheel? I am in the process of installing a single turbo on my FD and I went ahead and bought the light flywheel. I'm kinda nervous that I might not like it because I had one on my 1st gen and one on my 2nd gen and both cars would shutter or jerk when cruising at low speeds, like when you're in a parking lot looking for a parking spot. Can you please give us all the good and bad points of the light flywheel?

ps- a lot of guys have also told me that you getter better launches with the HEAVIER stock flywheel.

Thanks bro.

Yeah, a lightweight flywheel will take a little more gas to get her going from a stop but once she's going, it definitely accelerates faster (especially in 1st and 2nd gear) The stock flywheel is better for launching though.

C5s are no joke - they run 13.0-13.3 out of the box - even the autos can run 13.3s. If you are sequential, you should be fine if he decides to run you at an odd rpm where non-seq would take a little to boost. You'll be happy with your PFC and IC - makes a lot of difference with some tuning. And get that LW flywheel back because you car is slower now!

i want my 9.5 flywheel back. i really never had trouble lanching with it. i was able to get a 1.9 somthing 60 ft. times with street tires. i think it is worth having. where its isnt so great for lanching so they say it really makes up for it once you get going.
