cooling fan mod...

I was reading the cooling fan mod. There seem to be a couple of way to do this. The one that I like is the one that you just put a switch and do the 2 minute thing then the 30 seconds and that is it. My question is what if you just have it on all the time then wait the 30 seconds after you turn off the car? Will this have any effect as for the fans quicking in a different speeds?

no effect. Sometimes I leave the fans on med (switch grounded) after shutdown and it doesn't drain the battery or anything....they just shut off 10 min later.

the 30 sec is actually like 7-12 sec in my car anyway.

Yeah, doesn't matter how long the fans are on before you shut the car off, so long as its at least 2 min.

I highly recommend this mod, along with linearizing the stock temp gauge. I feel like I have pretty good control over engine temps.

The fans don't have to be on for two minutes, right?

The switch just has to be grounded for two minutes, then the fans come on. Then you can immediately shut the car off, wait 7 sec and unground the switch and the fans will remain on for 10 min on LOW.

Well, when I ground the wire on the ecu (by flipping the switch on), the fans come on (medium speed I guess). I do this at least 2 minutes before I shut off. Then I wait 30 sec and unground the wire (flip switch off), and the fans run for 10 minutes on low speed. I thought this was how it was supposed to work. I like it.

When I flipped the switch (same set-up as you) my fans don't come on for two minutes...go figure???

yours come on immediately?

The normal reaction is 2 minutes before they come on. They will stay on as long as the car is running. Shut down the car, wait 30 seconds, and unground the switch to go to low speed.

Don't leave the switch grounded. If you do, the fans will run at medium speed for 10 minutes before shutting off. Then it will run down your battery. This has happened to me, and it really sucks.

Yup. But it looks like that might not be normal. Mine's a '93, and I believe I remember reading something about other year-models being different.

edit: just checked out yours and adamc's profiles. Looks like you got 95's and 94's. Maybe that's why the difference. Can anyone confirm?

Since we've jacked this guys thread...

Maybe your battery is tired??? I have no problems running fans on med for ten minutes...or locking my key in the ignition with the radio on and lights on for an hour and half...yeah I'm an idiot.

I meant leaving the car, and the switch on over night. We have all been idiots more times than we want to admit.

are you guys actually following what the original post is saying??? Im trying my best to figure out what "do the 2 minute thing then the 30 seconds and that is it". what does this mean? What is the 2 mins thing? (turbo timing or would that be leaving the fans on after you turbo time and shut the car off???) also, what kinda switch are you putting in there??? the only fan mod which you should be doing is the one where you ground the relays so you can control all the speeds of your fans.
Personnaly, I think grounding the wire on the ecu is kind usless cuz you can't control fan speed. Also, you gotta time it so that it activates 2 mins before you shut the car off. as for the linearizing the stock temp gauge, why not just buy an aftermarket gauge and know what your temp is exactly??? why guess?

Two minute thing: Just flip the switch at least 2 minutes before shutdown. It can be 30 minutes. Two minute minumum.

Thirty second thing: Just wait 30 seconds after shutdown if you want to turn the fans to low speed, then turn the switch off.

Any kind of toggle switch will do as long as it has a minumum strength.

I like the mod. It's cheap, easy to install, and works great. If you try it, and don't like it, its simple to remove.

You don't want the fans on when the car is cold. This switch will turn them on, warm or cold, after 2 minutes. It is not hooked up to any kind of sensor.

If your car is like mine, then it will switch them on right away, at any time. But as adam said, you wouldn't want to do that when the car is cold.

skunks: Linearizing the stock temp gauge is a great idea for anyone who (1) wants to keep their car looking perfectly stock and (2) doesn't want a useless gauge (i.e. the stock unmodded temp gauge) on their dash. You don't need to know the exact temperature of your coolant. All you need to know is how far you are from the bad temps (too hot or too cold), and the linearized temp gauge tells you that.

I have both gauges. It's amazing that Mazda would put such a piece of crap in such a nice car. I know the reasons (excuses), so we don't need to go there. You won't know how bad the stock gauge is until you get another, or linearize it.

Has anybody thoght of a way to hook up the fan mod switch to a turbo timer, so that you could just set the turbo timer for 2 minutes and not have to think about it? The way I have it set up now I have to have it on for two minutes before turning off the car, then I have to wait for the turbo timer to shut off the car to unground the fan mod switch.
