Hey Guys,

Got a 94 touring. I've started having the temperature of the engine rise on me now that it has started to warm up. I never let it over heat. I got around to looking at it today, checking the coolant, fan relays etc. When I noticed, hey, the passenger side cooling fan was resting on the radiator! To the best of my knowledge it is not attached to the motor for it.

My question is, is there a straight forward way of reattaching it to the motor? I've pulled off some of the hoses, and there was not an immediately obvious way to pull off the fans. Or am I better off getting a new fan assembly?

That's not a common problem to happen. Most likely someone has messed around with the fans in the past and didn't properly tighten the nut or something.

The fans attach to the radiator with 3 10mm bolts along the top and it has 3 "pegs" that fit into holes at the bottom of the radiator. You'll need to pull damn near everything out if you're close to stock - battery, intercooler, intercooler duct, airbox, etc. to get down that far.

I would probably just be ready to buy a good used set of fans. Also, you might be needing a new radiator, that fan could have come off at speed and damaged the radiator.

Yeah I agree with Dale. Thats a very uncommon thing to happen.

Might want to get in there and check the fans out, because someone could have been messing with them and not done it right, and also to check the radiator for damage- the fins could have grazed the core, or the nut that holds the fan on, could have fallen off and the fan could have whacked it around into the radiator core, causing damage to the core.

As has been stated, to get to the fans assembly, you need to remove the airbox/battery tray/intercooler and the hoses and things associated with those parts. Which will take a bit of time and is fiddly. (I just did this to replace my stock radiator and other nearby parts, when I hit a kangaroo at 100kmh a few weeks back- the radiator was screwed, but the fans survived fine.)

The fan itself is held on by just a single nut. It's a simple task to reattach if it was the nut falling off, but I've never actually seen this happen before.

However, I have had my fan fall off before due to my battery box dipping and coming in contact with my rad fans. That actually caused my fan motor to overheat and seize and the plastic rad fan actually melted off the fan motor. (the nut was still in place)

 

IMO it's easiest to just drop the radiator and fan assembly out the bottom as a unit. Then assess things. You'll have to drain coolant, but that's not hard or expensive. And it may even be due.

 

the only time i had seen one side fan fail the second fan that was perfectly fine siezed up shortly after due to having to try and absorb all the heat from the radiator. i would probably pick up a good used set for backup.
