Cooling down the rotary?

Hey peoples. What is the best way to let the engine cool down after been driven? I just pop the hood and let it idle for a bit... any other ways? Thank you in advance.

i just park the car and let it idle for a time limit based on how hard i have been driving it,,, eg, if i stay off boost i might let it ilde for 30 sec-1 min , and if i have been boosting like an idiot then up to 3-5 mins

A lot of folks have noticed that temps shoot up during idle since the fans aren't necessarily running. So in a sense, idling doesn't 'cool' the engine at all. The engine ends up cooler running the last few miles nice and easy.

But in the end you have to stop the car and engine, so I only idle it to cool down if it's been thrashed and it's had no rolling cool down.

I always let my car idle untill the egt drops to 400C or less and then some. I always leave the AC ON when idling on the MED-Low setting and for the last 30 seconds of idle I turn all system draw including electrical and mechanical off. I think I going to install a fan switch of these days.

Usualy I'll turn the ac off and see if the egt rises if it does ill turn it back on and let it idle some more.

If you want to cool the car down, be sure the fans are on (turn the AC on). On my car, turning the A/C on will always decrease coolant temps, even cruising at 80mph, unless it's hotter than 95F outside.

Coolant temps will rise quickly at idle unless your fans are turned on. I think this is because there's no airflow to the oil cooler.

If you don't already have an accurate water temp gauge installed, buy one and you'll see all this for yourself.

Radiator, oil coolers, vented hood

I usually stay off the boost for about 3-5 mins before i hit my neighborhood. Then, when i hit my neighborhood, i drive with the hood popped (it's only like 1-2mins) at 15mph. That keeps my car pretty cool.

Letting your car sit and idle for anything longer than 20-30 seconds is a bad idea (for the purposes of "cooling down"). I honestly can't believe that anyone would arrive at their destination without being able to drive easy the last 30 seconds or so (plenty of time to cool the turbos off). Are you guys powersliding into a parking space or something?

Fan mod and easy driving... if you really cant drive easily a minute or two before getting to your destination... maybe you can throw in an electric water pump.

I agree with Nameless

either you could drive like grand ma fro last couple of minutes or If you got the money, invest on electric water pump and let it run for couple of minutes after shut down... Thats one of the best thing about EWP.

if you really want to cool your engine, try replacing your pre-cat with a downpipe, that will take alot of the heat issues away. Allso you can get a 2 1/2 in dryer tube and run it from your pass side oil duct vet up and behind that coolant neck, you might have to bore a whole, i just cut out a 3 inch circle in the undertray. and routed it threw there. hope this helps.

The only time this occurs for me is during an autocross. And that's a funny situation since the idling on the grid gets the engine hotter than the actual run.

Haha Dave, you are right. I don't really worry about it though. I just pop my hood. I have my fans programmed to come on at 89C, so the water temps stay low. Air temps increase due to SMIC heat soaking, but it's never bothered me for auto-x.
