Coolant Leak under Y-Pipe, Rough Idle

I've searched on this issue, but nothing really covers the symptoms I'm seeing.

Last week, I started my R1 in the morning and immediately noticed a very rough idle. The exhaust is very rich, but not white. Also, there is a coolant leak, above the exhaust manifold and below the y-pipe. Here pictures of the coolant leak:

In the pictures, the F/B/D/P compass shows direction of Front/Back/Driver/Passenger.

Does anyone know where that leak might be coming from? Maybe a coolant hard line? Or, ergh, a warped housing or damaged o-ring? It was running fine 12 hours before when I parked it, so I have a hard time believing it's a warped housing. I guess o-ring failure is possible, but I should see more coolant out the exhaust.

I couldn't find any loose or broken vacuum lines.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing these symptoms? Thanks.

There are two hoses in that general area... An inlet and an outlet for coolant. It may be coming from the inlet hose, and is then blown backwards to where you see it.

The turbo coolant hoses under the UIM are short (about 4 or 5 inches) and are molded, and are available for an unreasonable price from Mazda.

To replace them, you need to pull the air cleaner and the air pump. Then use long nosed, long handled pliers to remove and replace them. I used pliers because I could not get my hands into that area.

Like GOT said, it's really tight. I used long-reach pliers to do the job and a knife to cut off the old hoses. You need to pull the intake, air pump, and y-pipe to get enough access to it.

Ok, if we assume the leak is coming from one of those two hoses then why the rough idle and rich exhaust?

And don't delay! You could dump coolant suddenly and over heat, or you could have a coolant fire! (Yes antifreeze will burn )

Different problem. Fixing the coolant leak is obvious, but your richness issues are due to something else.

But, they started all at the same time. So, how could have a coolant leak cause the others, or vice-versa? The rough idle and rich exhaust are very poor and a marked difference from when I parked it the day before.

And, no, I'm not driving it. It's just sitting until I figure out what's going on.

It's coincidence that they started at the same time. The coolant leak has nothing to do with your other problems.

hmm...My guess is the coolant leak is a consequence of another problem.

Also, look at getting a new silicone coupler for the outlet of the turbo Y-pipe. There's a small amount of oil blowing out around the pipe, meaning it isn't that tight and some boost pressure is blowing out. A new coupler will solve that problem.

if u want u can get 3/8 inch hose instead of buying mazdas...its like 2 bucks and holds up very well!...trust me dropping the coolant by having the hose explode from the briddle old one.

Also, while in there, be sure to replace the 7 - 8" heater hose. Might as well do it while that area is disassembled.
