Coolant issue magically fixed - any ideas?

Ok, ever since my rebuild I've had to put coolant in everytime I drive the car.

Basically drive the car, park it up, next day more coolant put in due to buzzer going off.

I was also getting coolant overflowing from the expansion bottle when stopped. Obviously coolant I was putting in was going there.

Was curious as to what was going on with the coolant. Car started fine, hot or cold with no issues. No champagne bubbles when cap off starting the car cold. Also the rad pipe did not go hard shortly after starting the car.

I bought a block tester, but couldn't get it to work as it was simply sucking coolant into the tester no matter how much I took out the system!! DOH! lol.

I thought sod it and I was going to take it to a specialist to get a definate - is the car broken yes or no answer. lol.

I left the car with a little less coolant in it compared with normal - a good few inches down.

Then today I started the car - no coolant buzzer, car upto temp as norm etc and no coolant over flowing from the expansion bottle.

My theory....

a) I was putting too much coolant in? I've heard if you overfill it will throw out too much coolant? I did fill the filler neck more or less to the brim each time I added coolant to it. (which was daily)

b) possibly trapped air or an air block and running the car with the car upto temp and the filler neck cap off got rid of this?

Anyway.... it now seems ok. What's your thoughts?

hmm.. i have a simliar problem..

when i put coolant down the overflow tank it just poors onto the floor.. i don't know whether is something stupid and small or if its an actual engine water seal..

i will try to fix the stupid things first..

i also notice that depending on the slope of how i park my car it will drain faster and have to put more water in the next day

about 100 miles of driving and than parking untill the next day i will have to put about 6 - 8 oz of water or so for the next morning... im afraid to drive the car any farther and be stranded lol heard there were a couple things you should replace but i forgot the names of them

Start by testing or replacing the cap on your AST. If that is leaking it will allow too much coolant to push past it and into the overflow container, and it won't suck it back in when the engine cools.

If you're worried about the coolant seals, just use the coolant pressure tester kit and pressurize the system to 0.9 bar at the filler neck. If the pressure does not stay stable at/around 0.9 bar, look for a leak. If you can't see a leak, pull the lower spark plugs and unflood the engine. If you find the coolant coming out there you know it's an engine problem.

the coolant overflow has a vent at the top. If you overfill it, it will poor/pour on the floor.

You should not be adding coolant to the overflow tank, you should be adding it in at the water FILLER neck. As Rich said, the tank is designed to vent/rid itself of excess coolant so the pressure has somewhere to go.

As for the OP, how long had this been going on, if you didnt properly burp the system it will take a good 6-8 hot/cold cycles to get the air out of the system.

humm all so when the rebuild was done and the system was not Burped then that would cause the coolent not to flow past the "Stock" Water temp sensor - thus the buzzing noise
