Convert foglight switch to horn?

So I have an aftermarket steering wheel and rather then have a live line behind the hub, I was considering converting my foglight switch to be my horn since its not being used and the foglight wiring goes up to the horns. Is this a bad idea?

Oppa,

IMO, I would not use the fog light switch because it has 2 non-returnable detent positions. To mean that you press switch, it "clicks" to switch on the fog lights then you "click" the switch closed to shut off the fog lights. If the car horn is wired through that switch then it would always be on or always be off based upon switch position. The horn is a momentary switch and is spring loaded. The fog light switch is also in a position that could be easily triggered when fumbling around for something in the car. Or perhaps a passenger may inadvertently press it. The fog light switch has great potential to startle the driver, passers-by, other drivers when held for extended periods of time.

Does this help in your decision?

Cheers,
George

I think the position of the fog light switch renders it useless for being a horn button, personally. I mean, think about it...most times you need to use the horn it is a rapid response, almost instinctual thing and taking time to fumble around, maybe even having to look down to find the switch...yeah, probably not a good idea.

What's the issue with having a live line behind the steering wheel hub? Horn buttons for aftermarket wheels are really easy to set up.

Not sure about inspection in your state, but I can't see the fog light button passing.

The horn needs to be on the steering wheel so you can use it quickly in an emergency. Anything else is just plain stupid, and likely illegal.

I installed a small momentary switch in the steering wheel bezel, on the right side. It is very easy to reach there.
