Compression check with the engine out

I just got a used engine delivered, and before I spend the time and money to install it, I wanted to at least test the compression.

Any ideas for how to test the compression with the engine out? It doesn't have the flywheel installed and is just the short block. No starter or bell housing to crank it over.

Thanks -

You're not going to get a compression test with numerical values unless you find a way to drive it at a few hundred RPM.

The best I would expect is to turn it by the front pulley bolt and listen for even whooshes.

your best bet would be to find someone with a spare starter, flywheel, and trans. That way you get a idea of what you got.

Another way would to be just rebuild and you than now you have a good working engine.
