Some folks like to be able ot start the car without pressure on the throwout and thrust bearings. It's a bigger deal on engines that have plain thrust bearings though. And even more so with heavy pressure plates. A friend vintage races a '66 Barracuda and he ate up his thrust bearing pretty badly. He had a brutal 10,000 RPM Racing clutch too. Sometimes you can also get into a situation where you might need to move the car with the starter. This situation came up at work Friday. It was an ignition failure in a Burger King drive through.

I wouldn't advise it, but you could simply use duct tape to hold the pin down all the time.

For an emergency, that would do the trick nicely I'd imagine.

On a side note, I'm pretty sure my stock FD starts without the clutch depressed. I wonder if that was one of the differences between US spec and Aus spec models. Or perhaps my switch is playing up.
