Clutch? Shifter? or Tranny?

So my son tells me that he had trouble getting the RX7 to go into any gear?

I take a drive with him and yep -- if you stop, then the shifter "will not:" go into gear -- at least first or second. If you play with it, eventually you can get it into first and move on. It was like a "wall". You could not even go there.

So my first thought is tranny. But we have a low mileage JDM tranny that has been fine. Then I think shifter __ we have had too much play with the current shifter and maybe that's it? Or is it the clutch? No slipping though, so I'm not so sure.

Daily Drivers exhibit plenty of symptons, but this one is new to me.

As always, we appreciate any experienced help.

i have that same "wall" issue with my reverse gear.. im 100% sure its my tranny though.

When you are "playing with it" to get it in are you still engaging the clutch or left off per try? stupid question, but you are at a DEAD stop right? ? How does your fluids look, check the to see if its still full..

sorry not much help

Could be your clutch fork has bent slightly. Causing the clutch to not fully disengage.

If it is the clutch fork, wouldn't it "grind" and go into gear instead of the wall effect?

I checked it this morning, car off and cold. The shifter moves through all gears But it does seem to have a lot of slop to it.

it sounds like the clutch is not fully being disengaged? what about the slave and master clutch cylinders, are they still good? no sinky pedal?

Yeah, I'd say check the slave or master cylinders. I had the same thing happen way back in the day to my prelude. Out of the blue one day I COULD NOT get it to go into gear when the car was running, if you turned the car off it would go into gear fine though. My master cylinder was fried.

Hummm

Didnt put in a new clutch did you? Pilot bearing seal may be binding on tranny input shaft. Least thats what it sounds like. Pedal seems normal right? Or not?

Sounds like the symptoms I had when the clutch fork bent (very common on higher mileage cars). I thought all the symptoms were like a master or clutch cylinder going out.

My car has somewhat similar symptoms. It grinds into 2nd when it's cold, has increased effort to put it into 1st when cold. I'm pretty sure it's my 18 year old, 160,000mi transmission.

I will give it a viking funeral.

Sounds like a bearing issue.

Dealer (I know, I know) says it's the clutch and it's $1300.

Last time I got one from Ray at maybe $260 and paid a local shop another $250 to put it in.
Although I seem to remember they regretted the pricing for the install.
But my shop guy is no longer there hence we ended up at the dealer.
I'm going to talk to their Service Manager Monday and see if I can get a more reasonable price
