clutch question

is there any reason an FD clutch would make noise when engaged? just test drove one (first time), and as soon as the clutch pedal is touched, a kind of whirrling mechanical sound is audible. clutch worked fine, and had a really short engagemnet (normal?). i have nothing to compare it to, so anything is appreciated.

is that a serious problem? the kid said its been like that since he got it (1 1/2 year/15000 miles ago). he seems pretty on the level, just concerned cause he seems to know about as much as me about his car.not much. also, after driving for a awhile, is an odor common from under the hood? not coolant or fuel smell, but different. thought maybe from the turbos or something......just have never been in/around an FD before, and theres a lot more going on in there than my 83 12a. thanks guys.

I would suggest hooking up with a local person who is a little more knowledgeable about these cars and have him/her look at the car with you.

sound advice Mahjik, but i don't know anyone who fills those shoes. these were just the two things that caught my attention that were not covered by the "buying a 3rd gen" stuff.

Sounds like a bad throw out bearing or possibly a cracked clutch fork. Replacing either of them requires dropping the transmission.

how many miles on the car? Could be time for a clutch replacement anyway. Most kits come with throw out bearings. Even if it doesn't come with one, you better replace it anyway when you put a clutch in.

+1, and get a new clutch *maybe flywheel too*, while the transmission is out. Remember, the car is used. For all you know, nothing has been replaced.
