clutch??

My ACT clutch is now slipping pretty bad. It's been on the car for quite some time and served me well. It's time for a new clutch.
My car is 90% street around town driven but not a daily driver. I have done track days but only a few a year.
I can get a great deal on clutchmasters from a friend, but I've never used one of these before.
How do these compare to Clutchmasters, or other clutches you've used?
What particular model should I be looking at?
I'm thinking I should stay with a full street (non puck) setup so I can get around town but I've never had a more aggressive 6 or 4 puck setup so I've got nothing to judge it against.
My car has most of the bolt ons with stock turbos at 13 lbs.
Thanks

I'm not sure what you are looking for... You'll get some people that say Clutchmasters is high quality, and some others that say their clutches wear out fast... Who are you going to believe?

First off, what ACT clutch/pressure plate are you using now?

I'm using (what's left of ) the street/strip clutch with the pressure plate that came with that kit. I don't see it listed on the web site anymore, but I just did a quick search.
I want a clutch that is performance based but streetable. I like a bit of extra pedal pressure but I don't want the hard banging you get from a puck style clutch.
What I was looing for is some one who has had both or at least first hand experience with these to give me some direction. The price I can get on the clutchmasters is about 2/3 the price of a ACT but i don't want to buy crap.
If I do go with a Clutchmasters, I don't realy know what particular clutch to buy.
Thanks.

Is your price for ClutchMasters for a kit or just the clutch?

Personally, I'll be using the Racing Beat 6 Puck Sprung clutch. I have a friend who's been using for for a few years and loves it. I already have the HD pressure plate from ACT so the clutch was $150.

The price is for the kit. I would guess that I could use a different clutch and reuse the pressureplate. I need to look back at my rebuild papers from a few years ago to make sure of what's actually in there.
How's the RB 6 puck for streetability?

The ACT organic clutch disc is supposedly the same as OEM. Just get another clutch disc (around $120 last I looked), throwout bearing, etc. It's really not necessary to replace the pressure plate every time.

i believe lupe uses the act strip/street clutch if im not mistaken... thats what my car has. im in the midst of dropping another motor in so i might upgrade the flywheel and might as well get a new clutch to accomidate it. i've been doing a bit of research on clutch setups the most used and recommended is the act strip/street clutch. theres a growing population of the racing beat clutch 6 puck. im not sure which way im going to go but your setup you might want to go with the act again 6 puck clutches are sometimes a little harsh for the street as far as how they apply. hopefully someone will come in and lay down some good info. i would also like if someone could suggest the best place to buy one price wise. hope my post helped a little bit but im sure it will just spawn some more posting!

I sincerely doubt Lupe is running a S/S with 600 rwhp....

Anyway, I would just do as Matt Hey suggests. For 90% street use, I would just stick with the Act S/S. If you regularly did track days (over 10/year), and made 350 rwhp, then the cushioned 6-puck may be a good option.

Thanks Berg.
I don't think I'm up at 350 at the wheels yet. Perhaps at the motor with 14psi and the boltons. The ACT was nice when it was new but I did notice it slipping a few times even new but only due to bad shifting. Too much gas before engaging the clutch, it would slip like crazy. The only other driving it sees in spirited mountain driving, this is what is making me look at the 6 puck. I wonder if it wouldn't be worth it to just get a bit more bite.
I think step one is to see if there is any compatability issues between the ACT pressure plate and other clutches.

Hm....I am making over 350 rwhp and do not have any slipping issues with my ACT S/S at all. The problem I DO have is that 265 width Toyo T1-S do not get full traction until 3rd gear. 1st is nearly useless and I go sideways on the 2-3 shift.

You're right, I run the ACT 6 puck unsprung clutch.

Donovan,

The other part of the equation is the flywheel. Was the flywheel replaced or resurfaced when the ACT clutch was put in? How many miles on the current flywheel?

The flywheel has 90K on it. I don't think any work was done to it whit the rebuild on ACT install. I was actually thinking of getting a lighter flywheel, but I thought it would make the car less streetable.

I'm running 275 Yoko Advan AO32R and they grip pretty well. That may have been part of why I spun the clutch with poor shifting. They would grip VERY well when they were new.
The dang car is getting old all at once. I need new tires, brakes, clutch, turbos all at the same time, plus the car isn't even running right. As much as I like the car it may be time to move to something newer
