"clunking" noise whenever i push on the brakes

every time i push on the brakes i hear a loud "clunking" noise.. it sounds like it's coming from the back.. i don't hear it too bad if i've been driving awhile, but i hear it especially bad in the morning.. i don't have to be moving fast either.. i could just barely be rolling in neutral and still hear it.. any ideas?

also, i noticed i'm having a leak from my rear window.. when i lift the trunk up, water drips or almost pours from the sides.. i think the gasket around the window wasn't sealed right or something.. anyone know of any solutions to this that i could do myself?

yeah I have the same clunking problem, but can't figure it out. It started doing after I did a couple of donuts. Maybe diff mounts?

Pillow ball bushes in the lower control arm. Jack your rear wheel up off the ground and try to push and pull at it with your hand. If theres any movement then its definitely the pillow ball.

Very common problem.

Sad to say but the complete set doesn't cover the pillow ball bushes. I did the same thing as you and purchase the complete superpro set for the rear of my car and it didn't fix the problem.

The second photo shows the lower control arm and I'm almost certain that you will be able to move it up and down as so which will create a little clicking sound because the bushes are metal on metal. Now if you imagine under a normal driving situation, when you brake or accelerate, the force is alot stronger than using just your hands, which results in a noticeable 'clunking' sound.

If the above fails check your diff mounts as well as your PPF for cracks.

Probably the pillowball bushings. The test - pull up on the emergency brake, get in the car, then grab the steering wheel and "slam dance" yourself backward and forwards. If you hear clunking from the rear end as the suspension loads/unloads, it's pillow ball mounts.

The only source for those mounts is Mazda, and you're looking at $300ish for parts. But, get them all replaced and you're good to go. Make sure to get new dust seals, or the new ones will tear up in short order.

Water leak - do you have a rear spoiler? Many aftermarket spoilers aren't sealed to the hatch that well, so water leaks around the spoiler holes and puddles in the plastic trim on the bottom side of the hatch. Pop the hatch, the water pours out.

ty guys.. it most definitely sounds like the pillowball bushings as per dave's test.. as far as the water leaking, yes, i have an aftermarket spoiler that was on there when i bought the car.. so any suggestions on that? take off the plastic and just seal around the holes with some sort of silicone?
