Chip in Pinion Tooth - use or don't use?
Hi guys,
I picked up a ring and pinion set from a fellow forum member.
I noticed that it has a small chip in one of the teeth.
I will be using the car in autocross and on the track. I was told that the chip may cause vibration and it might get worse.
What are your thoughts? Should I use it or not?
Thanks for your help.

I would probably file the spots so they're smooth and flush and run it. As long as it's just chips and they're not cracking, you should be OK. The body of that gear is what engages and you have a LOT of meat to engage.
I can't see it whining or doing anything like that. Biggest thing is that it's nice and flat so it doesn't gouge into the ring gear or break off small pieces that could get stuck where they shouldn't be and tear up the diff.

I had bought a 4.4 ring and pinion from someone on here as well and they didnt package it properly...by the time it came to me there were a couple little chips from the ring and pinion hitting each other similar to your pics...i filed the edges of the dents smooth and installed it...no noises or whining...
I wouldnt use it. There may be hairline fractures leading away from the breakage that you cant see with your eye. Hardened pinion teeth are somewhat brittle. It may break or shatter another fine piece off later with use, and that might kill the diff.
I wouldnt..
I wouldnt..
