hks is good and cheap. Thing is, its mild steel, but that's the perfect excuse to get it jet coated.

You can find downpipes on eBay or thepartstrader.com once in a while. I got a Bonez for $110 from someone close by. It's mild steel, but it's hard to beat that price!

HKS downpipe will outlast your car unless you live by the sea or something. It's the best price for a downpipe and easy to install. I think stainless steel for a downpipe is a waste of money since you can't hardly even see it.

Jet hot 2000 exterior coating is good. They did a great job on the exterior of my down pipe and tubular exhaust manifold. “DO NOT HAVE THEM DO THE INTERIOR.” They FCKED up mine pretty well.

I really didn’t need a scope to see the inside of either to know that they were bad. But I used an orthriscopic ( I think that is spelled right ) scope that I had access to from work. My down pipe had bare spots of 3” X 1” in 2 placesand spotted thoughout. My exhaust manifold was spotted through out the length of the 3 tubes. I was 100% sure that the coating would have flaked off and started to modify my turbine wheel. I sent my exhaust manifold back to them to blast and re-coat and it came back marginal. The down pipe I kept because it is too thin to blast and re-coat. If the stuff comes off, it is down stream. It won't hurt anything.

Oh yah, I also sent them my lower intake manifold for their 1300 exterior coat with detailed instructions that I didn’t want the flanged surfaces coated. They didn’t coat the flanged surfaces but they bead blasted my freshly machined surfaces and my extrude hone. I wouldn't have minded the bead blast in my runners after the fuel injectors because it would have helped keep the fuel atomized BUT THEY BLASTED EVERYTHING.

I had almost 18 hours in pinning my upper intake to my lower manifold, hand porting, machining ECT. and they bead blasted EVERYTHING. I spent another 4 hours fixing it. Needless to say I was a little pissed.

so mild steel rusts? With the 3000gt HKS exhaust, there were people who had their exhausts rust out in less than a year and a half ... and their temps are a lot lower than the FD temps.

Please let us know how the fittment of the pipe and the O2 sensor is for this pipe. I know other people have purchased "cheaper type" pipes and had major fittment problems and the O2 bung was misplaced causing interference with the O2 sensor and the frame or other parts.

Yes. I would never put a mild steel exhaust component on my car.

Yes mild steel does rust but for a down pipe I dont think it would be a problem. Steel mufflers are a problem because there is a lot of spots for water to hide and then rust through. Mufflers always rust from the inside out due to the condensation that accures in it. A down pipe is one 3" pipe that would not trap water......and if it did it is so close to the heat that it would burn off very soon after start up. So rust would only be a looks issue not rust through issue. The real problem may be that stainless is a poor conductor of heat. That is why all stainless steel cookware has copper bottoms. Copper conducts heat well. All stainless would take 1 hour to cook an egg. A steel pipe would pass more heat then a stainless pipe. So I think the problem is adding more heat to an already too hot engine bay. I got a steel pipe for free and I used it but I wraped it with with manifold tape to keep heat out. It will not last as long as stainless but the price was good.

Thumbs up I bought a brand new 3" SS dp for $225 shipped from this guy:

Huy Tran
htranh@yahoo.com

The downpipe was 100% Stainless Steel and looked and fit great! I highly recommend doing business w/ Huy. Gee, sounds like I just left Ebay feedback...

As far as coatings go, Airborne id FAR better than Jet Hot IMO. My dad got some headers for his Hemi done there inside and out and they are BEAUTIFUL! Perfect inside and out. I have seen other jobs done by them and they all looked great. I would get in contact with them. I think their prices are even a bit cheaper.
