I don't know about that. I have not tried it. It's possible that it might fit if you relocated the battery. Even then, it still might not fit.

 

What SMIC will fit with this intake? I'm about the get a new intercooler and this is the intake I want to use.

Rising from the dead (the poster, not the thread...)

I've been running the CBA for almost two years now. For some hairbrained reason, I kept the "stock" airway blocked off, in some hope that it would force more air through the already less-than-spectacularly-well-designed SMIC. When I made the mod, I noticed that power was roughly unchanged, but lots more whistle from the turbos Honda boyz always get a little uncomfortable hearing that dentist drill...

Move forward to today, the first time I've been on the forum in quite some time. Read the dyno numbers a couple pages back and realized I was being really dumb. So I pulled the tape from the holes that the crossover box uses, bolted the old wedge back up (I still have the battery box, years after putting batteries in the passenger bins... Kept the old stock shocks too. Boring!), and went for a hunt.

Ummm, wow?

OK, so with just the cold air inlet vis-a-vis the CBA, the throttle response is peaky. You know that transition we feel from off throttle, to part throtltle (air pump doing its closed loop dance), to on throttle, which is kinda jerky? It's been that way for a while. With both air sources, that REALLY is far less present, much more smooth. This in turn allows more smooth shifts (off throttle to clutch, ease throttle while engaging in new gear), especially with short throw shifter (nowhere NEAR as smooth as I used to be with my 2nd gen). New tranny in near future...

Now, since the repop with a Pineapple checked reman, I've kept the boost to ~8psi with no pills in the lines. Honestly, the turbos are original, replacements are sick, and these only run a little oil in the intake tubes, good for apex seals, right? Anyway, the power is adequate for most of the High School Specials around here (mid 80s Accords with a fart can. Automatic transmission shifts with a fart can are so..juvenile? Not hating, just a different perspective), but it has been pretty peaky with the HP. The second turbo coming on was more or less a continuation of the first, a nice rush, 'bout like a good V-8.

With both air sources, the effect is pronouncedly different. The power is definately higher, really get that middle ear roller coaster ride feeling. The second turbo coming on (when the SMIC isn't heat soaked...sigh) is VERY strong. I was having too much fun raping Mustangs to look at the boost gauge to see what it was doing today, but I can look tomorrow. It's been 8.5-8-8.5 with a fall off ~6500rpm for the last couple years (hose job from the reman/rebuild still doing nicely), this will likely be different now

So, I fully recommend running both air sources. If I had a brain, I'd replace the SMIC with a nice big efficient one as my battery is already gone. But then, I'd have already replaced the utter POS ECU with something that doesn't turn the primary injectors OFF at 3,000 rpm, then pop the secondaries on with a nice surge, now wouldn't I? Part throttle fun... hesitates at ~0 psi, always has. Besides, stock Bose system needs replacement. NOW!

I highly recommend the product. I placed a strip of foam across the top to seal the box to the aluminum heat shield where it rides over the upper rad hose. Rest of installation was very easy, every thing fit, didn't even cut my hands

OK, enough thinking I'm cool and all. Great product, Great to see 'yall are still alive (I'll never get rid of this thing, just add to the fleet. Cayman anyone?)!

Good to hear from you Spurvo. It's about time you took my advice, and opened up the stock intake tract . Thanks for the endorsement, it's nice to see that you noticed a "pronounced" improvement.

The real beauty of this mod is that it gives the car 2 really good sources for cool air. None of the expensive aftermarket cold air intakes intakes do that!!!

Running solid 8psi, no dip on transition. Feels much more smooth that it did. Of course, trannys going out. If not one thing, it's another...

Thinking of doing your mod. Question - any effect on smog test in SoCal? I know that it's hardly vusible, but what about emissions. Car is ortherwise stock except for D/P and exhaust box

Half an hour may be a record . It usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Glad you like it

The mod will have absolutely Zero effect on your smog test. In addition to having no effect on the test, the smog techs will never even know it is there. Its a great mod for those that want to "look" stock. This mod will outperform all of the expensive cold air intakes too.

 

I saw this intake in person (kind of) on a car at JMC motorsports. I didn't even know it was there! That's how stock it looks. Awesome for those who want to look stock. I just like too much bling, and this wouldn't fit with a vmount. Great for SMIC though. I'd use this intake with the Knight Sports U type SMIC. That would be an awesome combo!

Umm, no but it's a vr, it's got feed sides, 99 front, some rims (looks like some 18's that were from the gb on here a while back), and a spoiler. I think it's a r1. It might be a base.

 

so, have anyone dyno it yet ??

 

Here is a post from page 11 on this thread. "Sonny" did a dyno. He found power gains up to 13 rwhp by installing this mod.

Adam, I'm overdue. Let me add another....
Since I suck at fab work, I got your kit and am happy. It was easy and definitely spooled quicker. Enough that I started to see some spike and added a MBC. Even though I don't deal with emissions inspections, I prefer the stock look and the fact that I didn't spend $300 + for an equivalent aftermarket CAI. The only thing I'd recommend to your other customers is to spend $5 at the hardware store for some plastic screen for the inside of airbox. I secured it with a little adhesive silicone caulk and it keeps the K & N cleaner longer.

Really though, sounds like a lot of positive things have been said about this mod... More pics would help, like how the heat shield stays in place and how the opening looks while it's installed

Thanks for posting. I figured you would get around to it eventually . With this mod, the intake really flows freely, so I'm not surprised that you needed a boost controller. A couple of people tried to cut out the plastic in between the ridges in the airbox, rather than cutting one large hole. This left a "grid" that they thought would help to keep the box rigid, and keep stuff from getting into the filter. Well, as you probably know, the box is very sturdy, even with a hole in it. What was surprising, was that the ridges were restricting air flow. When the ridges were removed, there was a noticeable performance gain. I suspect that the screen you have installed may also be restricting airflow, and reducing performance.

FWIW, I have only cleaned my K&N once since I modified my airbox 4 1/2 years ago. It really wasn't that dirty at the time. I only cleaned it because I had the box out while doing some other work.
