Received parts today and installed car pulls harder and boost increased by around 1 psi and that is with the stock mazda filter. The new (greenstuff) filter should be arriving any day. Thank You very much for designing this it works great. Also installation is not difficult at all.

Adam just helped me install his special intake kit on my car today. I am very impressed and I CAN feel a difference. The design is very genius and simple at the same time. Definitly a must have mod for the guys that want to keep their car looking stock.

Kory and James: Thanks for posting your results . Glad you are pleased with the mod.

You should be fine at 11 psi. If you find that you are going higher than that, you will need to get a boost controller.

 

I've been driving around with the mod now for about two weeks, the CBI kit is the best $70 I've spent on my car.

The throttle response has improved along with a slightly more aggressive growl. I do get that "moo" sound now at certain rpm/load, but it goes away quickly enough that I'm not really bothered by it.

The shipment was prompt and the installation was relatively easy, just watch how you move the intake hoses around. I managed to break the rubber section (90 deg bend) right after the T/C relief valve and that was a PITA to replace (I'm still not sure if it's in tight enough or not).

 

I've been running with Adam's airbox mod for about a year now.

I block the front intake to avoid stealing air from the intercooler, and lengthened the airbox hole (towards the firewall) and modified Adam's sheet metal a bit.

I am using an upper airbox assembly that has the baffling for the airpump outlet pipe cut away. This generated alot of "mooing", that I fixed by removing the airpump outlet hose, plugging the airbox entry and exit with rubber chairleg ends (as suggested in some other thread on this forum), and drilling holes in another chairleg end and placing that over the airpump outlet above the turbos. This setup still drones a little bit, but is much better.

I run this mod with the Greddy SMIC and a Pettit duct, for a close to stock look (helpful in CA for passing smog). I occasionally track the car in this configuration and have been very pleased with the results.

I have also removed the left (and right) black plastic blocks in the bumper's intake oval, to help get additional air to the intake. At some point in the future, I may modify the sheetmetal to create a smooth 90 bend to help channel the air from horizontal to vertical.

Anyone want a drop in K&N filter for this?

 

A K&N is a "must have" for anyone with a stock airbox. Even if it is unmodified!!!

 

I have k&n but is very hard to close the air box with K&N so I let it out because I dont want to brake again the clips from my new air box and I am with stock now.

 

I just designed intake "tubing" for my stock box that Im making from carbon fiber. Havent put it on the road yet to see how it works. It feeds air from the front of the car directly into the bottom of the box.

The 2 pieces interlock together. The piece on the left goes though the bottom of the airbox and hooks to the piece on the right which comes out to the small side piece in the main opening at the front of the car. The small side piece has a hole cut in it to accomodate the opening of the intake tube.

Ive created a couple of pieces with carbon fiber but had to modify the shape some for fitment. Should have a completed 2 piece system in a few weeks.

Ill post more pics if there is any interest in this project.

I kind of skimmed through the thread. How does this mod work without the head shield if you just cut the hole in the air box?

 

If you don't use the shield, you get hot air coming into the airbox. It won't work like it was designed. Hot air from the radiator, and hot air emanating from the exhaust, engine, & turbos will also enter the airbox. The whole point of having an airbox is to keep cool air coming in, and keep the hot air out. Without the shield you won't be cool

That's kind of what i thought. I'll have some downtime over the weekend, i was thinking about cutting the hole inthe bottome of the air box and doing the heat shield later is why i wanted to know.

I would do the shield and the box cutting at the same time, for 2 reasons:

1. If you cut the box first, you may cut it in the wrong place. The cut needs to be made so that hot air won't come in. If you don't have the shield, you will probably cut the box wrong, and have to buy a new one to fit the shield.

2. If you cut the box now, you will have to pull everything out again to install the shield. Why do the work twice?

 

So Adam, do you think your cheap bastard intake performs better than the $300+ aftermarket intake systems?

Yes, it performs better!! The reason is that it uses two soures for cool air. None of the expensive cold air intakes (that I have seen or heard of) have two separate cold air sources.

My intake kit doesn't inject any fluids, so it won't cause "hydrolock".

 

I think it performs better than any of the hot air intakes and it probably at least equal to the box style intakes if not better. Plus you can fool people into thinking youre stock.

 

someone saw my interest and sold me their unused kit. I had just installed new plugs, wires, fuel filter, and O2 sensor, did a base run - car was boosting a perfect .689. after Adam's intake was installed, my boost went up to .74 , and 1st gear hits redline instantly.

I did turn my boost down a click to equal it out until i put a mod map on the PFC.

I'm quite happy. I still have a paper filter that is quite clean in there, so I haven't gotten a K&N drop in yet, but i'm quite impressed with what my 'butt dyno' is telling me.

 

This won't fit with a ASP medium huh? LOL
