Talking Cheap Bastard Commander Holder

I decided to make my own commander holder. It had to be something that could be easily removed. I Bought a piece of sheet metal for about a dollar at home depot. They had some tubular weatherstripping that they gave me. Made a template, and cut the metal. Sliced the weather stripping to go on the metal where it will contact the steering column.

Glued it. Screwed on a 1 1/4" piece of 1/2" dowel.

Painted it. Didn't wait long enough for the paint to dry . Then I wrapped some electrical tape around the dowel to make it fit the size of the cigarette lighter.

You can see my fat thumb print (will be painted over)

Once the new coat of paint dries, I will put some velcro on it and voila!!

I may cut it down a little bit, but for now, I really like where it will be. An excellent view of the commander, and I will be able to see most of the lights behind it (high beams etc), and will have easy access to the trip meter button. With the velcro, I will be able to move it around a little bit if I don't like exact spot. It looks like it will be a nice location .

Can you try making a mirror of that template and putting it to the right? I'm practicing constructive criticism

Hey adam! nice work. you need to get the cheep bastard slogan trade marked. LOL.... only thing wrong is the police will see this right away and go into inspection mode citing you for 27156(B) cvc (modified vehicle) and off to the referee you go. this will be nice for track days, but will need to be hidden on the street. at least in california... good luck with the sales

Thanks Jeff. I hadn't really thought about the police. Since it is going to be velcro'd in place, I should be able to remove it, and shove it under the carpet before the cop gets out of his car. I have only been pulled over one time in the 6 years I have been driving this car, so I'm not too worried about it.

I'm not selling anything here. That would be in violation of forum rules!!!! If anyone wants a templete, PM me. All you will need to do is mail me a self addressed stamped envelope.

Nice job Adam! I don't think it matters which commander holder you've got. You're going to have to hide it regardless....haha!

I should be able to see it perfectly. The view from the last pic is pretty close to the drivers position view. My PFC has not been installed yet. I just got it, and am getting things ready for the installation, and tune.

While it's immaginitive, it does block the lights, blocks the panel and uses up the cig lighter for an ipod or radar detector.

It certainly blocks most of each of the "dummy" lights. However, you don't need to see the entire dummy light to know that it is on, especially at night. If I feel it is blocking too much of the dummy lights, I can simply lower it slightly on the velcro.

Regarding blocking the "Panel", what is there to block? There isn't anything there!

I don't have an ipod (or anything else to plug into the cig lighter), and my radar detector is hard wired into my map light.

If I don't like the exact commander location, I can move it around a little bit since it is velcro'd in place. I can't imagine ANY better location for it, especially considering that this setup can be removed in about 2 seconds.

great location and looks good. I've had my modified cell phone holder in the same location for a few years now. This location does not block anything... Well, maybe if you're 4 feet tall you'd have a hard time seeing the other lights but otherwise no problemo.

Why didnt you just stick a piece of velcro on the cluster panel next to the lighter instead of making a bracket?

Because then I would have an ugly piece of velcro stuck to my dash, which might damage the dash upon removal. In addition, velcro on the dash panel would not be flat, and thus would not hold as well.

Very creative. It's in plain view where it's suppose to be.
