Chase down Wobble?

Hi all.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Basically i have a quite bad Judder/Wobble you can hear and feel when your letting OFF the clutch coming from 3rd to 2nd from the Left hand side, i seem to get more judder when you let the clutch out slowly and at lower RPM slow 3rd and into 2nd at 30-40mph.

The car has stock running gear but has a Excedy twin plate clutch, it has had the wobble for a while now but recently i found one of the stock Diff bushes had split making the diff very loose so i have replaced both of them with Polly Bushes (diff was taken out and didn’t seem to have much play in it and i checked the PPF while it was apart for cracks etc) its when the bushes went in the wobble became much more Pronounced.
So as it stands I have gone over the rear suspension bushes and even though they are stock and do feel soft they are the same both sides, I was also told to check the wheel bearings and they seem fine (little to no play) so I’m not thinking it has something to do with the Drive shafts maybe?

Any idea’s?

While it certainly may be something else...first response is always "Pillowball bushings". When I redid all of my bushings, with the exception of those in the Trailing Arms, all the bushings were freely movable by hand to some degree ranging from minor resistance to none.

I'd like to suggest your start by considering at the very least your pillow ***** need to be replaced.

Sounds like you may have a bad cv joint. Jack the car up and see if one feels looser then the other. Spin the tire while holding the opposite shaft, while squeezing the shaft with your hand and see if you feel anything other then smooth motion.

Am i correct in saying there should be no movement in the Pillow ball's? (just to make sure i am looking at the correct thing on the Pic attached the pillow ball's are the red ringed ones is that correct)

I had a quick look at the Drive shafts this morning and there is a fair bit of wear in them all tbh but i can't pick one out as being worse than the others?

I've just had a good look at all the Bushes, pillow ***** and wheel bearings and tbh can't fault them, there is a bit of wear in the Drive shafts but thats the same on both sides.

The only thing i did find was with the Right rear wheel on the floor i could move the left hand hub 15-20 degree's before the Prop Shaft moved at all. Does that sound right? there is also a very minor oil leak on the Left hand side of the diff (proberly a coincidence thats its the same side as i'm having issues with)

Really odd...... Just isn't anything jumping out at me, i did think it might be the clutch being a bit harsh but tbh it feels like wear or some thing broken.

If you haven't, double check the nut that connects the rear swaybar to the end link on both sides...make sure it is tight. Just throwing out random thoughts until a better suspension guru pops up! =)

Twin disk clutches are known to chatter and have somewhat harsh engagement. Look at engine mounts. The PPF does a good job of holding everything together but it doesn't mean the mounts aren't taking a beating. Although I would think that you would hear/feel more frequently if it was a bad engine mount.

Maybe the revs/harmonics between 3-2 shift is just right and the clutch throws a fit by chattering? What's the gear shifter feel like when this is happening?

I can feel it through the shifter but it doesn't feel like the Trans is moving about too much. Before i put new Diff Mounts on it the Shifter did used to Jump about a bit when your on and off power, But all that has gone now and it just feels like Vibrations rather than moving about (if you know what i mean)

I have just been over every Nut and Bolt i can find in the back end, Checked the PPF is tight and damage free, Had a really good look at the Prop shaft for wear and damage and had a good look at the motor mounts (there stock but look in good order, took the Bonnet off and gave it some stick and the engine doesn't move much)

I had a word with a guy i know who rebuilds Trans/Diff's and after a quick crawl under the car said the Gearbox is in good really good order but the Diff wants a set of seals in it, he thought he could feel play in the two output shaft bearings and he said it would benifit from the end play resetting but it can't be that bad as it doesn't whine even with Polly diff bushes (think he wanted some work out of me )

Its great Fun this, i have checked loads of stuff and its not giving me any more clues
