changing spark plugs
I was in the process of changing my spark plugs and the I pulled the spark plug wire off one of the trailing and there is a round rubber piece on the plug... is this normal or did it come of the spark plug wire? thanks again
Not normal. May want to post a pic up of what you found.
Also, some spark plug sockets have a rubber insert inside to hold the plug, and sometimes it stays on the plug. It could also be that.
There's really not much inside the plug wire to come off and stay on the plug - it's just a thin silicone boot with the metal clip in there, nothing fancy.

Also, you can pretty easily remove the throttle body, makes it WAY easier if you're changing the wires as well. 4 bolts and 2 coolant hoses, and the 2 cables going to it.
Also not sure what you're showing in the picture

Yes. In my opinion they are easier to change from below....one of the few things I disagree with FSM over. Reinstall that wire and you can access them that way. Their location will be apparent. A thin- walled socket makes it easier. I recommend a bit of antiseize on the new plug's threads. You might want to take a read in the factory service manual anyway.
That picture you used is from Rob Robinette's site right? Just go by that example and it says it all pretty clearly there. It tells you which wire goes to which plug. The front rotor will have the Trailing up top and the Leading below it, and the second rotor will have the same, Trailing up top and Leading below it. The front rotor ones are a bit harder to see. Changing them from the bottom is much easier! And make sure not to mix up which plug wire goes on which plug. If you get lost refer back to Rob Robinette again.
That plug you posted a picture of is definitely quite worn and was due for replacement.
Motor sounds like it could just be flooded or something. Also, you want to be sure the plug wires are on securely - they should pop on to the plug itself. The vacuum line to the MAP sensor on the firewall could have been knocked off, check that.
If those all check out, deflood the car. With key off, floor the gas pedal then crank for 5-10 seconds. Let off, shut the car off, then try and crank again while pumping the gas pedal. You may have to do a few iterations of this.
Also, you REALLY need to get your FD running and come to Deal's Gap Rotary Rally. I'll be there as well as a ton of other RX-7 experts, it's a great way to learn a LOT about your car. I'm driving 8 hours from Florida to go, it should be a short drive for you from South Carolina!
