CEL: knock sensor vs. wiring harness? (long)

After 6 weeks of work, put her back together and fired it up. Immediately got check engine light, codes 5 and 46 (knock sensor and charge relief sol.) I did a search, then pulled the alternator and checked the knock sensor wire and connector, and sure enough it broke right at the wiring harness. I cleared the codes, then attached one end of an alligator clip to the harness side of the broken wire and the other to the knock sensor lead. Checked codes again...no change!!! I also tried connecting the wiring harness side directly to ground...no change!! Still getting knock sensor code (and CR code). WTF? Does this mean I have a short/broken wire deeper in the harness?

uh...okay, this is turning into a monologue. Anyhoo, found the SECOND bad spot in the knock senor wire after mangling the tape/brittle plastic crap around the harness, soldered, connected, and voila, no more #5 code. I now see the bad wire for the Charge Relief solenoid...its deep...will have to re-remove ext. manifold. That makes me a saaaad panda (southpark, anyone?) .

hey where is the knock sensor connector on the wiring harness exactly, like which harness is it (driver's side or passenger side-ecu), The power steering and KNock sensor look familiar and could go to either one??

xstacy7: I'll take a look tomorrow to see if I can let you know which is which. My knock sensor lead fed into a wiring harness just behing the alternator, using a single pin connector, which in turn feeds into the main solenoid/injector harness under the rat's nest. The damn thing is still throwing sporadic CEL codes despite removing the connector and soldering the wires directly. POOP.

thanks kung stew, I tried to plug the knock sensor up there as that was where I was told it was, but it won't reach. I'll have to check it out more thoroughly next time I get a chance. Where does the P/S connector go then, probably on the drivers side wiring harness I would assume. Thanks
