Catback Recommendations

I currently have an Apexi GT Spec catback.
http://www.apexi-usa.com/product_exh...=181&pageNum=1

It was fairly loud with a cat installed, but with the silencer was tolerable (and legal) for street use.

My car is now single turbo, no cats, straight midpipe.

With the silencer the exhaust note is pretty loud, and would probably not pass DEQ.
Not that I'm currently trying to pass DEQ, but keep reading.

Without the silencer the exhaust is hurt-your-ears loud.

I would like to put in an catback that does a better job of noise suppression, without sacrificing too much power, and in particular, not sacrifice response time.

I tried one autox event with the silencer. The turbo lag is noticibly worse, and makes it somewhat difficult to time accelaration coming out of a corner.

Looking for recommendations and experiences.

Thanks.

I don't have any personal experience with a single turbo, but one of the best compromises, IMO, is the Peter Farrell (PFS) catback. The Racing Beat is also a favorite, slightly quieter and negligable difference in performance. I have the PFS and would recommend it. Some drone at highway speeds, but very tolerable and fairly deep at low rpm and gets fairly loud (I'd give it a 7 out of 10 for WOT noise) at higher rpms. I drive mine everyday and through small towns and it doesn't bother me or anyone else. That being said, you can hear me coming up the street in my neighborhood. I think it's one of the quieter systems but without sacrificing flow and response. I don't know if you're familiar with Fritz Flynn or not, but he was looking for a PFS system for his track car a few weeks ago. To me that says a lot...he's had a LOT of FDs and setups. Oh, and i do have a cat on mine, btw.

This is one of the most covered topics in this forum. Racing Beat dual-tip. Flows great. Is quiet. Sounds good. Looks subtle. A GT with a silencer is more restrictive than the stock exhaust.

If your wastegate is dumping to atmosphere, it doesn't matter what exhaust you use.

Yah I just yesterday put a midpipe on and I have the PFS Single tip cat back, and the noise is tolerable. I mean if you go WOT everyones going to know about it, but for just cruising theres no drone and the idle is not bad at all. But as soon as you step on it, you hear it for sure.

You may also want to consider a resonated midpipe. It will supress sound considerably.

I think a lot of members use the PFS single and dual tips for the best sound supression/flow charactoristics as far as cat-backs.

I am personally using the resonated midpipe along with a old school GReddy PE melon cannon. Sound is minimal with great flow.

I have a Racing Beat single tip. My car is hardly audible at idle, but sounds great at high RPMs. Just the way I like it I'm also running an RX7Store resonated midpipe. My car was much much louder with a high flow on it. I guess the resonator really does it's job.

As Kuroi said, with an external wastegate that dumps to atmosphere (instead of being plumbed back into the downpipe), you are essentially getting a straight shot from the exhaust ports to the exterior! It's LOUD. Hearing damage inducing loud.

I have Racing Beat twins and love them. Gives it sort of a stock look so it is classy, but sounds mean as hell w/o being extremely loud.

They make GT's for FD's? I didn't know that, just thought N1's only. But yes, A Pex'i ftw.

Heh, what not to recommend? My Blitz NurSpec that came with my FD...pretty medium-loud as I totally dislike it. Will get the RB duals next! I've heard these in person and they are ultra-quiet at idle. The single tip RB is quiet too.

Sorry, I don't have any video/audio clips of my exhaust. Will try to get some sometime.

Meantime, here are some other exhaust clips to enjoy:

Talking M2 = badass

I've got the M2 rear section. It looks very similar to the RB duals, except it doesn't have any writing on the muffler tips. I'm non-sequential + hi-flow cat + downpipe for exhaust. Car seems loud as **** to me. Others who have more experience with rotary cars say, "eeeehhhhhh.......... it's pretty quiet." IMHO, the RB duals/M2 are just plain sick I get decent spool (pretty subjective, I know) under WOT. ..

Etiher of the RB's, I have the dual tip, a quiet enough not to enrage neighbors. I use it with a Bonez cat.
