Car wont go into Overdrive.

Just got an auto fd and it wont go into overdrive, everything on the tranny in functioning properly except that. Do you guys have any idea what might be the cause of this. I thought maybe a sensor or electrical. Please auto owers give me some ideas of what might cause this.

is the hold light illuminated or flashing? and is the gear selector set to "d" and not "2"?

Please go to Section K of the FSM and do basic troubleshooting.

Yes, there are well defined steps to troubleshooting in the FSM. I suspect a malfunctioning temperature sender, which will keep the car out of O/D, but...there are ways to test for this.

just covering the basics. ok mr. "not that new", have you looked at section K? There's a way to pull diagnostic codes for the tranny computer similar to the engine ecu. I would start there.

I guess you cant joke around on the forums, people take everything to seriously:-)....anyways...I don't have the car with me right now so I can't check for codes, Otherwise I would, but I'm suspecting it might be the solenoids (shift A...but shift A and shift B should both be replaced). Does anyone know where to find these shift solenoids? I've called around everywhere and looked through I don't knwo how many Mazda sites, but can't seem to find any....

Thanks again.

yeah, you can find them in section K of the fsm. Better and more reliable than any mazda site. Look at the sticky section of this forum and there is a link to the fsm's for free.

I had this problem when my car was a auto. But my problem was due to the aftermarket alarm. The alarm installer taped into a 12v source from the tranny, but once the alarm was disconnected, it was back to normal. Don't know if the alarm was robbing volts from it, or why it was doing that, but it was definately the aftermarket alarm. Whats weird is... The alarm came with the car when i bought it, and i drove it for 6 months with no problems, and then one day the tranny wouldn't go into overdrive.

Strange...the previous owner did have an alarm installed. I'll have to check into that.

I can't make it any easier for you than that. Should be some good reading while you wait to get back to the car. When my tranny grenaded I had first and second, but nothing after that. Still good to 60+, but annoying as hell. Luckily was not my daily driver. Just looking at the trouble shooting table there at least 8 things it could be. Good Luck.

I'm also guessing that by "overdrive" you mean 4th gear.

any voltage problem or short should cause a trouble code in the PCMT which you can check by jumping TAT and GND in the self diagnostic checker, turn the ignition key to on, then check the hold light flashing. Man-looking at the K section of the FSM sure brings back memories.

Thanks weaklink. I've been reading through the FSM for the past hour or so...finding some potential problems and such.
I sent you a pm regarding running parallel ECU's, hit me back if you could. Thanks again.

Oh, and yes by 4th I mean overdrive.
