Car Starts, but then dies, smoke!

After working on my car for the past 2-3 months, I finally finished and went to start it up. At first, it would not start after 5 or 6 times trying to crank it. Then I decided to give it some gas while cranking, and then it did start for about 2-3 seconds, and as soon as I let off the gas it died. Im guessing its flooded, but I was just curious that I got it to start, and it still died once I let off the gas. After that I saw some white smoke coming from the engine, not sure where it came from.

Check your map sensor line. The smoke might be some fluid being burnt off of the exhaust manifold or something. Good luck!

So I went to start the car, and I can get it to start if I give the car gas. It sounds like **** when im gassing it, and it doesnt die as long as I give it some gas. But once I let of the gas it dies. Also, there was tons of smoke, any ideas?

Did you install new plugs? You never told us what you did to the car when it was down so we have no clue what it could be. Im betting, it is flooded.

I'm having a similar issue. It'll spin and hit for a few seconds but never actually start. I'm not priming the carb with gas but pumping the accelerator a COUPLE of times (two or three) before I hit the key. Sometimes this works...sometimes it doesn't. I'm careful not to flood it...but you know how that does.
I've not yet changed the plugs but their "new" as I've not driven the car much but I know carbon builds up on the RX7 plugs.
Do I need just keep off the accelerator or is there another trick?

Thanks,

I did the rats nest simplification/block off plates, and a new custom intercooler. Im gonna try and put the oem intercooler on, and see where that gets me. Is it possible to just flood by sitting there for a long time? this is gonna make it very difficult to problem solve whats wrong

my car runs crappy after sitting for a couple of months it would usually start on one rotor but eventually once it was warmed up it would run fine.

Change the plugs, never start the rx7 and turn it off without letting it run for atleast 7-10 mins, never start it and move it 30 feet and cut it off. Before shutting the car off, always rev it up to about 3k rpms and turn it off right as the rpms start to drop. This will help prevent flooding.

Unless your custom IC had something inside of it that shouldnt have been there, you are wasting your time switching out the IC. At idle you should only focus on things after the Throttle body as pretty much anything else will have no effect on how the car runs. Go spend $24.00 at your local Oreillys auto parts store for new plugs and the car will likely fire right up.

Thanks for the advice, I will def try this, one question though, Ive searched and it seems changing out the spark plugs seems to help. What exactly happens with them when the car sits for too long that requires them to be changed?

Also, out of curiousity, what would happen if I put the spark plugs wires on the wrong plugs?

I have never put the wrong wires on the wrong plugs so I have no experience with that, however, my guess is that it would still run.

The car sitting should not foul the plugs or damage. It would be more likely that the battery was nearly dead and you tried starting the car. The battery likely had enough power to fire the fuel injectors but not enough power to spin the starter fast enough for the car to start, thus resulting in flooding.

I recommend changing the plugs every 4-5k miles. It is $24.00 and takes all of 20 minutes.

Are you sure that you have the map sensor line connected to the vacuum source and not the stud that is directly above it? We have seen this many times, just had a car trailered to us last week for this proplem...

Pic of stud, vacuum port below
