Car sat for 7 months. How to syphon gas?

Hey guys, my seven is finally legal for road use again (emissions problems). I filled up the tank in April of this year, and I still pretty much have a full tank. I drove it around my neighborhood a few times since then, but not enough to use up the old gas.

I got a tube, and was going to syphon the gas out to add some fresh stuff, but the tube won't go into the gas tank. It only goes in about a foot or so. Is their some kind of a safeguard Mazda put in the fill tube so you can't syphon the gas? Will I have to drop the tank to get the old gas out?

I should have used some Stabil or something before hand, but I had no idea that the car was going to sit this long. Is their something I can use now like octane booster or similar if I can't syphon the gas out?

I searched the third gen forum for syphon, but didn't find anything helpful. Thanks in advance guys.

no dont use stp. idk if there is a drain plug for the fd. i would emagin so. try looking. you can also get to the gas tank by rolling back the carpet (as if your going to the spare) at least you can on an fc.

look up how to change your fuel pump. and go from there. you can probly syphon out from that port. since your fuel pump is right ontop of your gas tank .

What do you know? Their is a screw in the bottom of the tank. Now I just have to figure out how to get the 20 gallons of gas beneath the car into some kind of container. I think this is going to me messy... :-)

Not to disrupt your thread, but I'm wondering if 7 months really makes a difference. What's the difference between 7 month old gas and present gas? (besides how much it cost LOL)

I had 7-8 month old gas and the car drove fine. I didnt boost though and i wasnt going to cause i was afraid of any risks.

So thank god the tank was already almost empty, i just filled it up with fresh 93 before it got to E.

what you have to ask yourself is: is a tank of gas really worth the risks?

The gas is fine...I did this every Winter for like 6 years with my 7. I also have 6 trucks that sit for 6 months out of the year....I jump the battery and start them up, no problem every year.

yea thats what i was thinking, i remember hearing about a guy that bought a whole bunch of gas when it was cheap, and had his own humongus container, and he started to withdraw from it. I also heard the US has a gas reserve, and cycles them into the market to get the gas a little cheaper, or eat the extra cost. so i would think old gas isn't a problem, sort of like alcohol or hard liquor

+1 on leaving the gas in it. IMO, more trouble and risk then it's worth to drain it.
Drive it around some and if your worried about it, just don't go WOT. Run as much of it out as you can and put fresh in. Consider an oil change soon too.

What he said...Gasoline all over the place and yourself is not worth it in this case...unless you are the human torch.

if you are going to drain though, make sure to set up some candles underneath the car for proper lighting.

That is tremendously funny. Seriously.

I read that gas destabilizes after roughly 6 months. I drive roughly 12 miles a day. It would take me forever to run the gas out with out boosting.

Mahjik, Goodfella, Dale Clark, Hcoleman, Rynberg, or similar, what do you say? Drain or is it ok if I don't boost?

Well, the reason it will only go one way is because there is a little plastic butterfly valve where the opening of the gas tank is. I wouldn't keep shoving something against it, as it is somewhat weak.

I had "old gas" that was in my car for almost 6 months. After the rebuild, I still drove on this gas. I didn't boost on it, since I needed to break in my motor. If I were in your shoes, I would just top off the gas and drive it normally. Why go through the trouble of draining it?

I'd recommend making an excuse for a nice long road trip with minimal boosting. Hell, it's an FD......you'll be through that tank in 200 miles
