car got keyed... pics

well my anger has funally subsided enough to talk about it... last week, came home to my apartment late night to find all the parking spaces near my front door taken(no assigned spots) so i was forced to park down the street... came out next morning and saw that my car had been keyed on both doors... one line down each side... now i know people can get defensive about "their" spots but this goes way beyond acceptable. i knocked on every door in the building and nobody seemed to know anything so i basically just have to grin and bear it... figured id post some pics along with a few of the car since theyre long overdue
enjoy:

Did you have comprehensive insurance? Only good thing you can get out of the situation is to pay your deductible and get a nice brand new paint job.

And BTW, where do you live? Bad part of town?

Man, why the hell do these people have it out for you like this? That sucks though man, I've never had anybody key me but ever since I've been living a little closer downtown I've had 2 people back into my in parking lots. The estimates are close to $1000.

Also, I was wondering about the deductibles if you get insurance to cover it. The insurance lady said that my insurance would not be affected if I got the car repainted through them but when I asked other people about it they tend to think that the insurance company will eventually get the best of me (or my money) if I do get it repainted. What do you think?

A car getting keyed is a Comp claim, not collision, kind of like hitting a deer or a hailstorm. You'd still have to pay your deductable, but it should't raise your rates.

I wanna know that too. Seems like you could really milk the insurance company for their money on this one. Take them the highest estimate then use the lowest estimate when getting the work done and you've made yourself the money back to cover the deductible.

Is that a factory paint job? I am a painter and it actually looks like it's only in the clear coat from the pic. If so you should be able to have it sanded and buffed out. Only if it isn't a factory paint job, factory is too thin.
Yes I would go off the handle and probably walk around with a bat for a few hours if that happens to my car. As for the *** that threw the rock, **** the bartender he'd be in the hospital.

Speaking as a previous insurance professional that's not true! Even Not at Fault (Comprehensive Claims) can effectively raise your insurance. Now it varies from state to state and maybe even the insurance company you have, but the company I used to work for if your comp claim was over a certain threshold it could be used to rate your insurance. How screwed up is that?

So how do you find out? I asked my insurance lady directly and she said that it would not affect it but everybody else seems to think otherwise.

Hmm.. My wife told me that and she's actually my agent. Maybe it differs from state to state or by company then. I've had hail claims and a deer hit and neither has raised my rates, but I never got my yearly premium back.

I would call a few people at your insurance company to double check, ask what applies in your state ask them what the actual monetary limit or threshold is.
And again I'm not sure if differs from company to company but your loss will show up on the CL
UE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report that your company or next company (it's pulled when you start a new policy and every so often) so you just want to keep that in mind. Remember insurance companies are in business to make money. They'll try to tell you that it was some just B$ statewide increase that affected your premium.

Maybe you could get something in writing for them? (Fat Chance!)

A lot of insurance companies actually are not allowed to raise your rates because of claims. But like theglassman said, there's an undisclosed threshold, be it one claim or many claims, that if you pass, your rates will go up. They usually don't say "you've had too many claims" or "your claims are costing us too much" because again, technically speaking, they can't raise your rates based on claims. But what they do to get around that is they reassess you as a "higher risk driver" which necessitates a higher premium. At least that's how it works around here.

That’s what I was planning on. I already have a daily driver, now I just need to sell the VR-4 for a FD on the weekends, or track days.

Also, OP, you said this was because people are territorial about their parking spaces? That should be an easy fix. See who usually parks in that spot. Then set up a camera, park in that spot again. Then if the guy keys it again he gets to pay for it being done both times.

Every time I’ve been in an accident, whether it was my fault or not, my insurance made me go to a company they selected to repair the car. I guess a lot of people have had those ideas..

Made you go? Sounds like you're getting hustled. Insurance companies can't even make you fix the car!! You can get an estimate for the damage, get the check from insurance in YOUR name, and pocket the check, w/o ever repairing the damage on the vehicle. 100% legal. Needless to say, you also have the option of using whatever shop you'd like. They may give you some BS about how they won't "guarantee the work" if you use outside shops, but they'll still pay for it. Damage is damage. Where you get it repaired is besides the point.

Also see if you can leave your vehicle at the shop you trust, so the adjustor has to come to the shop. That way, the body shop can work w/ the adjustor to make sure they're not under-estimating the damage and the labor involved.
