Can You Pull an Engine w/o a Hoist?
Can you pull out an engine without a hoist? I was thinking of jacking up my car and then putting jack stands... then when I would remove my tranny so it drops to the floor, then remove the engine so it drops to the floor...
I have dropped engines from underneath before. Make sure that you have everything clear and out of the way down there. You will have to remove the front cross beam and suspension to do so. It is more work but it can be done.
errr I've done this - it's an absolute ***** to do. The only reason you would do it is if (like in my case) it's a wreck where the strut towers are pushed together.
Having said that, getting the engine out from under is the only (but major) drama. The engine can be left mounted to the subframe and just dropped. You'll need to take out the steering rack before it drops though. It's also easier to leave the GB bolted to the engine and just undo the PPF and prop-shaft.

Can you pull an engine without a hoist.....Maybe!!
Should you pull an engine without a hoist..... NO!!!
The risk of injury, and damage is way too high. Renting a hoist is not very expensive, especially when you consider the potential for permanent injuries.
Don't do it.

By droping the subframe you will still need something to lower the motor to the ground. Go get a hoist for $100 and save the hassle. Unbolt the tranny, leave it in place and pull the motor.

its not lot a hoist is that expensive. look around in the sunday paper for a store having a sale. I just picked a badass one up for $150. I was going to rent one, but whats $150 when I am about to spend 3000+ on an engine rebuild. Some corners don't need when trying to save money and working on your car. Better safe then sorry.
Question: Can you pull an engine without a hoist?
Answer: Yes you can, but why would you want to?
Dropping the motor out the bottom would be a bigger pain (and still require a hoist) then just removing it in the normal way. (This from a guy who has dropped several motors out of midengine cars where the engine always comes out the bottom
)
Normally rental yards will rent them for $50 or so.

I bought a heavy duty chain and come-along, attached it to the 2x10" rafters in my garage and use that to pull engines. It works like a charm and only cost about $30 from Home Depot. Thats an option
However a engine hoist is still much easier cause you can move it around, especially if it has a load leveler. If you rent it on a Sat morning from a rental place thats closed on Sun you can have it for 2 days and it only costs one day. I think I rented one for $45 like that.

whats the rental fee? $35 a day? if you cant swing that, then i wouldnt even bother pulling the motor out. lord knows you will chince out on another $20 part that will end up costing you $1000 down the road.
