Can someone explain to me how the catback gives the car more horsepower?

You know i never really understood how a muffler and some piping from the cat converter can increase horspower? its just a muffler!!! how can it increase horspower when its not even part of the motor? I mean what the hell does the muffler do to add power? I mean the reason i ask this is because there is an import shop in my area that sells no name brand mufflers that look identical to the name brand mufflers like HKS and Greddy. So what makes these HKS AND GREDDY better than these? and how the hell can a muffler give the car more power? if i have a 4 inch piping to the no name muffler that looks identical to the HKS AND GREDDY can i gain some serious power? if not why?

Aftermarket mufflers decrease backpressure and allow the engine to breathe better than the stock muffler, which is quite restrictive. It's like trying to breathe through a straw as opposed to breathing naturally.

The more gas that can exit the exhaust, the more air that can enter the intake and with that, comes more air into the combustion cycle, coupled with an increase in fuel and you have an increase in power..

whats up rotaryrockett. hey, i've looked at a lot of your posts lately. i don't mean to be rude, but a lot of your questions have been pretty simple questions that you can find out for yourself with just a little research. I'm not saying that your a newbie, but i think it would be overall more helpful if you gathered a database of useful websites (this being one of them) and learn what u were pondering, plus much more so you won't have to ponder later, rather than asking lots of simple one question posts on here.

btw, to answer your question, muffler does nothing to help hp, only thing it does is silence the noise. only way it might take hp is if it is not a straight through silencer, which will cause restriction. wider pipe=more top end, less low end torque and vice versa. as for name brand vs brand x, its construction, precision, sound, materials, coating, weight, etc. u get what u pay for, and for an rx7, i dont recommend getting anything less than the best. HKS hiper, apex n1, racing beat, m2, pettit all make good exhausts, do a search for "exhaust" for opinions

you gain 50% more horsepower with the hks or greddy logo stamped on your exhaust canister... it's a proven scientific fact. always buy name brand because generic is for people with poor taste.

Forget any brand name. Go with a cat back straight pipe. Any muffler shop can produce one. Same results as brand name exhausts. Sounds great. With stock cats not to loud but loud enough. Cost about $$145.

Thanks Bake, thats exactly what I'am going to do. I'am getting a no name brand muffler that looks exactly like the name brand ones and I'am getting it straight piped with a 4inch to my main cat. I know a guy who does a real good job with this type of ****.

forget about driving it on any public roads and highways as well if you do this. especially if you live in california, you can get your car sent to the junkyard and crushed and get 10 years in the slammer for having no cat.
