A call to all RX-7 owners, help me!
O.K. So I am planning on getting an RX-7 1993 and above. But I dont know a single thing about the car, except for its Rotary engine, and sporty handling. Heck I didnt even know the engine needed to be replaced at 100K! I did some online research and I found these. What are your opinions on these cars?

I only have a budget of 14,500 so I dont have much money to burn. I also dont have enough money to make costly repairs or upgrades (which many of my friends said the RX-7 was infamous for). I would greatly appreciate any tips you can give me to finding a sporty, yet reliable RX-7

The standby answer to these types of questions is usually this...
Don't get into the game, if you can't play... meaning be ready to spend some cash on your car. Both the cars you linked to say they had reman. engines... but I'm not sure if I saw anything about rebuilt turbos in either... which is a major repair cost (though not as much as an engine rebuild). I'm a poor college student... getting ready to graduate this semester... & I just bought my FD a few months ago (although it has been in storage since purchase to save money, & keep it out of the snow). You can own these cars even if money is tight, you just have to know that you WILL be spending more than usual on repair & maintenance on these... but they are worth it.

I bought mine when I was a freshman in collage. If you dont have a large budget look for a more reliable car, dont even think about daily driving it for a extended period of time. Your in california so you are in some good hands many good rotary shops out there. But they all cost money.
If I was you and you have your heart set on one try to find on that is mostly stock except for reliability mods, and a mazda reman engine and rebuilt or low milage turbos done by a well known shop. Make sure they have reciepts for any maintinance or major repair.

If you own one of these, you should have a second car.
When you come into it expect replacing engine and turbos, set that $$$$ aside. Buy the cherriest, most reliability modded car you can find. IMHO $14k for that car is a bit much, not enough mods. as the ad says, the bose sound system .. blows... do some more shopping.
How much would you pay for an FD with aftermarket downpipe, cat back, intakes, intercooler, suspension, radiator, computer?
You may not think you'll want all that stuff, but you will, and more.

If that's your financial situation, don't buy an FD. I paid $16k for mine, with 45k miles on the original engine. I haven't had any major problems, but I've spent over $1000 in maintenance per year. The first year I had the car, the major expense was a new set of tires for ~$600. The second year, I spent about $400 to replace bent swaybar mounts and most of the pieces connecting to them. I've done most of the other work myself: spark plugs, fuel filters, coolant changes, accessory belts, etc... To get the car in tip-top shape, I still need to spend $400-500 this year on new suspension bushings, and whatever it costs to clean the injectors.
I guess what I'm trying to say that the cost of the car isn't the only expense you should be worrying about. Don't forget that you'll be getting 15mpg on 91 octane, and your insurance will probably be more expensive also. If you're absolutely certain you need this car, I'd say save up, and buy a cheap & reliable car for a daily-driver. If you just want a rotary, look into FC's, they're much more available and easy to maintain.

Do not buy this car. Come on, be different from all the other young kids that come on here and ask this question and actually listen to all of us old geezers that know better....

Wishin I Still Had The FD
DO NOT BUY THESE CARS. Aside from all the other good advice above, the seller of this car is a complete fraud. His name is "MRX7." I took a trip to San Diego a long time ago to visit friends, and looked at two of his RX-7's while I was there. One of them, he wanted $17,000 but wasn't worth any more the 13k. The other he quoted me ~13k, and nothing on the car worked. The interior was completely falling apart. Plus the engine was in need of a rebuild and suspension needed work as well. Stay away from him. Like the others said, if you don't have the money to fix and maintain an FD, don't buy one.
