A/C too wimpy on 3rd Gen

I have a 93 Touring which I annually have to add 1-1.5# of freon because it slowly leaks out. Every component was replaced on the A/C system, even the condensor and expansion valve. Most components were replaced 2-3 times such as the compressor. At least now, I can go almost a full season without a recharge though.

When I was shopping for my 3rd Gen, I found that 9 out of 10 of the 3rd Gens had brocken A/C. Didn't work, or blew warm. Seems like a super common problem.

Even with a full system and all the new components, my car never blows cold enough to keep you from sweating in the car most of the year in Florida. It seems the heat gain from the windows and body cannot be compensated for with the stock A/C system. Owning a 626 in the past also had the same problem, a wimpy A/C system not big enough for the car.

Has any one had any luck with getting a decent A/C system in their 7? I'm tired of replacing all the expensive parts and spending $200.+ for getting it recharged with R12. I hesitate on R134 as some of the other posts say it blows even warmer.

I think mine is in good working order, and you're right, it is not powerful enough to keep the car cool in the Mississippi summer heat. On the highway, it's fine. I even have to turn it down on highway trips. But around town it's terrible.

I think my car has the best a/c ever. I always have to turn it all the way down or off after a short time to keep myself/passenger from freezing. Guess I'm the lucky 1 of 10

Mine stopped working last summer. I actually trusted the Mazda dealership to troubleshoot it. Turned out to be a leaking compressor o-ring. Labor was cheap; compressor seal was cheap; R12 was EXPENSIVE!!! $75/lb. .... ouch.

Ran cold throughout the summer. Pretty good when it got real hot (Texas summer); but not quite enough for sitting in traffic in the dead heat of August. Course, now it doesn't work with my PFC. Stupid engine harness ...

My A/C was useless for the first 7 years or so. I had an extended warranty for 7 years/100k miles and was constantly taking it back to the Mazda dealer (I know - that was my problem but they were great with my warranty)....

Anyways my A/C started sucking again and they supposedly fixed it. My warranty ended up expiring 2 weeks later and when I had returned it they said sorry, but it was a new problem. $1,800 to fix it.

So...I told them to fix it. Disputed it on my Amex statement, sued them in small claims (the owner personally which I'm sure got his attention - sucker should incorporate).

They settled with me for $2k and guess what - that last time actually DID fix my A/C and it's been much cooler than it ever was. That it until I installed my PowerFC and setting #3 ceased to cool...but that's a whole another discussion debated here.

A co-worker told me about this stuff that Napa sells. It's some sort of R-134a (green gas) conversion kit that comes in an aerosol can. He says it has stop-leak in it, and all you do is connect it to the nipple and let 'er rip. I figure I might check it out when I get the chance.

theres more to converting it than just sprayin r134 into the system you have to put in all new schrader valves and some other parts.. i had mine converted professionaly for $130.00 it doesnt blow as cold as r12 but it so cheap so i let it leak everywhere and not care

Yeah the a/c on my FD is a joke. After I drive a while the heat just radiates into the cabin from the engine/downpipe etc. I just had it serviced, needed 2 lbs of r12 (40.00 a pound!) and had numerous leaks sealed...got my fingers crossed as I approach the brutal Florida summer.

Switch to R-13A and you won't have to worry about 40 bucks a pound for R12.

Cool

I am one of the few lucky ones. My compressor gave up after 9 years of good service. I replaced it with a new factory unit plus I replaced the dryer and expansion valve. Cleaned out the evaporator and it was refilled with R12.
Yes, very expensive but it will freeze your ***** now in the summer of Dallas,TX.

I too got tired of the R12 cost to replace. I also got tired of R134a, which in order to cool comparably to R12 must be charged to a greater pressure than it should be, which in turn is tough on compressors. I've replaced the evaporator three times and the compressor twice. The last time, I decided to try something different, so I went with Autofrost (http://www.autofrost.com). So far, so good...lets see if it will last the whole summer this time!

jds

PS: I did a lot of searching and reading about the various refrigerant options. Autofrost turned out to be relatively cheap, it cools actually better than R12 supposedly...its been so long since my system both worked and contained R12 that I can't personally verify this...and is not so hard on compressors as R134a, Hot Shot, etc. I didn't have any of the new o-rings that are designed to be eaten by refrigerant blends, and I had reasonable assurances that, while Mazda wouldn't promise anything, most if not all RX-7s came with barrier hoses that wouldn't leak the smaller refrigerant molecules found in non-R12 systems. Like I said...so far so good.

My ac seems to work great. Even in the texas spring time heat will see how it makes out this summer. I imagine it can't be that bad.

I actually modded my a/c condensor to cool the cabin better even in the Tx heat.... I did this b/c I have a FMIC and well it makes a/c's suck ***.... anyway I mounted 2 radiator fans to the condensor and wired it up using a relay which fed off of the a/c on/off wire. I can send pics if needed. I still have to remake my p/s pump cooler line because it hangs down now... o well it make the car much cooler and I don't have to go 130 to get it to do it

I've owned two 93's and both A/C systems worked fine even in VA heat.

I have a PFC now and AFAIK all settings seem fine.

This is all news to me... did you guys buy jap spec pfcs or something?

Man how u live in Vegas with no A/C? I lived there all my life and I would bitch so much if I didnt have any. It gets so friggin hot there. Anyways, I've only had my FD for a couple days now, but the AC works like a champ. The previous owner had some trouble with the compressor not starting up when it should, so he just wired a separate switch to manually turn it on. Whenever I hit the switch, it starts to get cold quick.
