Does anyone know where I could find either a A/C pulley with belt (bypass power steering) or just a replacement belt to be used just for A/C?

From looking at the fd shop manual...it looks like by bypassing the Power steering you'd lose contact with a tensioner...maybe you could disable the power steering while retaining its pulley? unless your taking it out for weight...why keep the a/c but no power steering?

 

My PS broke a while back and I like it just fine without it, but I live in Florida and it's starting to get hot, so I've been trying to get the AC back!

 

I find it amazing how many people suggest/junk the AC, who don't live in states like Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana or Florida.

I bought mine back in Nov with no ps or ac..... I love not having the ps but I'm sure when it gets 85+ out I'll wish that I had the ac

I'll probably be driving the jeep and not the fd during the day....although the jeep has ac, the top is never up so it is kinda pointless and never gets turned on....but at least it is wide open and dosen't collect heat while parked and has more wind flow to cool things off....Lukily it only gets really hot here in Memphis like a couple of months out of the year.

for one, It's going to be hard to get rid of the PS without getting rid of the A/C as well. The tensioner for the belt that goes through both of them is next to the PS and the un-ribbed side of the belt rubs against the tensioner. To eliminate the P/S the belt would have to go on the outside of the tensioner with the ribs on the inside. I don't know what effects this would have such as slipping and what not. But you can sure try it. Take a string and wrap it around the belts then measure it. It's not that difficult.

 

I wanted to do the same thing a while back, and didn't get help from anybody. I'm not sure if very many people have even done this.

What I did:

1) Take off the P/S, and cut off the part of the ac/ps bracket that holds the p/S in place.
2) Pull off the stock tensioner pulley.
3) Go to a junk yard, and find a tensioner pulley assembly off another car that is ribbed, as opposed to smooth. (I used the a/c tensioner from an sw20 [mr2 turbo]. It only has 3 ribs, but it works)
4) Put the new tensioner assemby in place of the original.
5) Make the tensioner go all the way loose, wrap a string around where the belt would go, and measure the string.
6) buy a belt similar in size to the string, put in on, and enjoy having a/c withoug p/s.
