Buying a Second FD for a daily driver

I have the chance to buy a second FD for a daily driver.

It has 37k original miles. The current owner is the second owner and has only had the car for a few months (he bought something else exotic). It only has a BOV and an intake. It has crappy American Racing wheels which would definitely need to be replaced, and it feels like the front rotors are slightly warped. It is being checked out mechanically this morning and I know that I can get the car for $13,500. It looks like it has been repainted, but the paint looks as if it was done well (I would give it a "B").

My only problem is that it is Montego Blue. As you can see from my sig, I already have a Montego Blue FD. However, I figure that I could buy this car now for $13k, do the reliability mods, fix the brakes, put stock wheels on and have about $15k into the car. I could probably turn around in 2 years and sell the car for around $13k.

What would you do assuming everything checks out mechanically?

Why would you want to have another FD to have to dump money into?

I wouldn't mod this one (besides downpipe, boost controller, maybe catback). I see what you're saying though...

??????????

Ya I don't really understand this move....The low miles would almost make me want to keep this one instead. I don't know. Given some choice and the fact that you do have the money...I think there are much better, easier, more reliable and fuel efficient cars out there that can be almost just as fun as an FD. Plus...5spd plus traffic equals kill myself after 20 minutes.

Low miles helps, but it's only part of the equation. Age is still a problem.

At 10 years old, you could have sticking/failing solenoids, hardened vacuum lines, dried doorhandles/joints, and many other items. Using it as a daily driver will only increase the risk of failing these things, so $2k doesn't sound like enough to keep a very nice FD very nice after 2 years of daily driving. Even if you skip the reliability mods and replace everything with low-mileage used parts, there is a chance you'll need bigger work done that would blow that $2k budget. (Turbos, blown motor, new motor mounts, suspension bushings, etc).

Although $13k for any FD with 37k is a great deal. It strikes me as a great second car for someone with the intent on cleaning up / keeping a stock FD in the OEM style. (That's kind of what I'm doing).

Dave

personally, i wont want 2 fds unless i had some serious dough

but i would have my fd for a weekend killer and have a nice new car for a beater

just get a new car for a beater and use the money left over from getting the second fd and use it towards your current fd

Getting 2 fds is like getting 2 girl friends...you are asking for more money, more trouble...but hey, if that fulfills your wants* then why not...

I won't have to worry about much traffic. My new commute (my house to law school) is 13 miles each way with 90% of it being on a four-lane road along the beach.

The only way I would do it is if you were going to make some money out of it, and then be able to enjoy it in the meantime, or if it was a different color and look all together. But to buy it to use for 2 years, risking the chance of possible problems, which mean dumping money, and then selling it at a loss .

I know the car probably looks awesome as all fd's do. But it's not gonna get you any extra points since you have the mirror image parked at home.

I had a miata 1.6l 4cyl before and with full tank of gas, it gave ran 280-300miles (aprox 12gal)
It handled good but for daily drive its too uncomfortable. I'd recommend corolla instead. My 2002 corolla runs about 350miles full tank and its comfortable. =)

What are you saying...my sig is too big?

If I didn't put all that in there, I would always be answering PM's about my setup.

Anybody here think of insurance !?? FD's aren't as cheap as a miata on gas insurance etc... I mean I'm not complaining, I love my car, and am willing to sacrifice a bunch, but not for a car that sits... that's just in my mind...

Hello!

Insurance.
I could never own two FD's. I would slowly go crazy.
Too much maintenance for me.

For what it is worth, I would go ahead and get the FD and sell of the two at a profit latter on. The FDs are always going to be in demand, and as an owner you know why. If you take care of your FD and provide the necessary maintenance, there is no reason that you should not be able to use one of the FDs as a daily driver. Besides it is a chick magnet.

A chance to get a second FD? And you are asking if you should? Are you on crack? If anyone ever has a chance to get a second FD they should take it! 37K miles for $13,500, sounds good to me. I vote get it now!

If you can look at 2 FD's side by side in your garage and not help but feel that you're doing the second one injustice by not modding the hell out of it like the other one, then you have more willpower than most of us. I would end up babying the 2nd one the same way until it caught up in mods to the 1st. It sounds like a great deal, but I dunno. Good luck
