Question Buying a Rx-7

I have just found out that my firend is selling his Rx-7. I believe its the touring model. Cant remeber the exact mileage but its not to high. He has done a lot of work on it replacing a lot things under the hood since he bought it a few years ago. The car runs very strong, handles well, and the interior is in good condition. He thinks the car is putting out around 320-360hp at the wheels since his mods are very similar to his firends who has dynoed his car. I have never owned a Rx-7 before but once i took a ride in it i was hooked. I race motocross so i know about working on your ride, and thats what i have heard to expect when buying a Rx-7. My question is,

(1) Should the worst happen and the motor goes what would be a ballpark price for a rebuilt motor and install?

(2) What would be the best place closest place to Nashville to have the car worked on?

(4) Is there a general hp range that once you go over stuff starts wearing out/breaking more often than usual.

(3) Is 12,000 a good price?

Thanks for any and all comments.

1. Search.

2. Goto local forum. Search.

3. The higher the HP, the more strain on parts(such at the stock turbos) and yes, they will fail quicker.

4. Without pics and a modlist + mileage we can't tell. 12,000 is low if it is in perfect shape. Search, there are a few buying guides on the forum. Don't be so damn lazy.

New motor from dealer is 6,000
reman goes for around 2-3,000
street price for full swap should be around 3,000 used but with all the sensors

best place to work on an rx-7 is your home, even some mechanics don't know/don't want to work on rotaries.

12,000 depends on mods, mileage on the motor

Funny you're getting a rotary and live in Nashville...

I'm from Jersey but looking to buy a 3rd Gen before I move to Nashville in August.

Thanks for the advice. I found out its got 25k on the rebuilt motor, 114k on the chassis. sorry no pics with me, but the car is in good shape. 99 turbos, intake, full exhuast, boost controller, boost guage, he runs it at 10psi. i believe the only thing lacking is a tune he said, and one bad solinoid that keeps the car from building boost going from the second turbo down to the first.

I'd say about 275hp, assuming a drop-in K&N air filter and a ceramic-coated downpipe will add 20hp to an otherwise bone stock car. Personally, I've had much better experiences with cars that were mostly stock compared to cars with big power mods. Your mileage may vary, which is why you might want to do your own research rather than just trust my opinion.
