buying my first rx7
Here's my issue...
I'm 23 and this will be my first car payment. Right now I have a 93 Taurus that is completely paid off. The RX7 I'm looking to buy is an auto 93 twin turbo with 96k original and about 5k on the new engine. It has only been driven by a woman who hasn't taken it over 5000 rpm because she lacks an ecu upgrade (it cuts off at 5000, is that normal, the mechanic says it is). It also needs a bit of paint work. I'm getting it for 8,500. Even thought I'm going to buy an ECU upgrade and work on the paint, I still think this is a steal and a great investment when i see the resale value going on ebay, classifieds, etc. My concern is this. The car would basically be a daily driver. I could afford to keep the taurus, but just barely. I really need to sell it. It seems like every review I read includes "con:reliability, high maintenance costs". Then I read others saying these people just didn't take care of it. I am not mechanical and can make no repairs myself. Can I afford to own this car?!
PS-Sorry if this isn't in the right section. If it's not, I'll know next time.

You can afford to own it if you dump another 5K into it. Figure AST/DP. Then you maybe looking at time for boost hoses and FPD. Point is you will need a reserve when something goes. Auto trannies suck though.

thanks. What is ast/dp? Also, I know auto trannies aren't as fun and fast, but is that why you're saying they suck, or is something wrong with THIS auto tranny? Any other replies would be greatly appreciated
THANKS AGAIN

3 posts down from the top is a useful sticky. It says, for some unknown reason, "Newbies/Others Please use search / Useful Links" Go in there and research and you will get better information.

Auto tranny Fds DO NOT SUCK. Fact: stock Auto Tranny FD produces 255 hp at 6200 rpm. A stock stick FD produces 255hp at 6500 rpm. Apples to Apples, the stock Auto is a bit slower (1/4 ET) only because of turbo lag at launch and 3.90 gears (Stick can be launched at just about any rpm and it has 4.10 gears).
I'm certainly not dissing the manual tranny FD. But don't give any future FD owner negative comments towards buying an RX-7 car based on the fact that it's an automatic.
I think everyone will agree, ..whether you own an Auto or Manual tranny FD, you'll always try to find a way to increase HP and make it faster.

This is probably the dumbest suggestion i have ever heard from anyone on the forum. Why would you suggest him to sell a daily driver in order to mod the car. A daily driver is the best reliability mod you can have for an FD. Dude, don't get rid of your taurus, because more then likely, you will need it.

Hmm that's weird, I never wrote this message? I am not looking for a 93 rx-7!! How can two people have the same user name (rs turbo)?? I own a 1990 Turbo II which I have listed for sale in the Canadian buy and sell forum.
Thanks

agree with fastcarfreak,
Keep the taurus! The rear tail lights look like FD tail lights! hahahaha Anyhow...trying getting a manual. IF you have more options to play with. Option like ecu upgrades and future mod. And HEY! it's a sports car, whichs you need to have fun in it!
Good Luck.
