8k is unusually low for a running FD. Even thought it is an auto, I would be very suspicious. Better not buy it.

I would ASSUME everything is wrong with it. I would also assume it's beat to crap.

Until proven otherwise, assume an $8000 FD is $10000 in repairs from being a $13000 FD.

If you can't afford to buy a good condition manual car, then you can't afford one selling for $9k either. Trust us.

there are so many different things that need to be adressed when looking to buy an FD. i would suggest searching through the sticky FAQ,you will find answers there.

Well, you can start by reading the FAQ thread, like I told you in your OTHER two threads from today.

You sound like you are very young and are going off half-cocked here...I suggest you slow down and learn about what you are getting into. If you are just looking for a cool sexy car, this isn't the car for you.

You might as well give me the 8k, I want to upgrade to the a-spec twins.

That's three assumptions right there. First you're assuming he'll take it to a shop. Second you're assuming the shop will know what to look for and third you're assuming he'll actually tell you what's wrong and deduct appropriately.

I really can't imagine how to set yourself up to be screwed any worse.

if you buy the car for 8k, expect to dump at LEAST another 3 to 4k into to get her up to par. now read that again, and then a third time. you'll be buying the car and then spending half the amount again, just to get it up to what it should be at. the reason for this number is that im assuming its going to need a rebuild. just cause.

note, this is before anymore go fast purchases whatsoever.

if you're still serious about it after reading what i just wrote (and please let that sink in...half as much again), then make sure its checked out by a reputable ROTARY shop. go to the shop with him when he takes the car, if at all possible.

GET A COMPRESSION CHECK. and DO read the FAQ, there is an incredible wealth of information there that will help you to truly understand your car. and understanding your car is the first step to really enjoying it.

To be fair, there ARE good deals out there but they are few and far between. I got my '93 FD for $8500 with 76k on the ticker with a new PFS-installed motor. The only major things wrong with it was faded paint on the hood, broken gas door release, and it needed the pillow ***** and the air temp sensor replaced. So, yea, you could get lucky. Chances are against that though

I would say don't buy it SOLELY for the fact that it's an auto...

Seriously... fast car + automatic = WTF MATE?

follow up on an FD for sale-any suggestions

ok so the guy with the rx7 called me back today and said that the people at japtrix wants to put in a new (used) tranny. he said hes gonna drop the price from 9k to something lower. and that its gonna cost 1100. the car is auto and i told him to hold off on it because i want to get a manual conversion. he said if thats the case then he'll sell the car to me for 1100 less than the 9k. its the 93 fd and the people at japtrix are pretty well known. i told him i cant give him a definite answer until they run some diagnostics on the car. he said he'll get them to do a compression check and see if there is any leaks and when i go see the car ill go with the check list from the faqs. maybe i should give him the checklist so that they can check it out too? they should know what to check on rx7s some of the people at the shop are owners. any suggestions on what to do? the price is too low for there to be nothing wrong with it, but im willing to put the time (and money) into fixing the problems. he says aside from the tranny nothing else is wrong, so yea im still kinda skeptic.

IMO, I would buy a car in the condition that you want. If you want to buy a fixer-upper, go for it. However, if you want a running car, spend more money and buy a running car. If you want a manual, buy a manual.

+1 That's a good price if the car is otherwise in good shape and only needs a tranny. If have the time and expertise to do the repair/swap work yourself, you could have a good running FD with minimal investment. If you have to pay someone else to fix it / do the swap, the cost is going to go up exponentially. Ask yourself if this is what you want (swap it yourself or pay a lot to have it done for you) and make absolutely sure the car is in the condition you expect before buying it. If the trans is bad there may be other factors to consider.

hmm thanks for the input. im going to see the car when i get back to florida. is there anything i can ask from the guy to prove he got it checked out? and what were the results?
i was thinking i could buy it as is with 1100 off the original price, then i can use that money to do the conversion.
