Buying a 93 rx7
I found a car that has aTwin turbo rotary engine, street ported, 3mm apex seals, all by R&R Rotary w/ approx 2K miles (originally 130+) on rebuilt engine. AST upgraded, vacuum lines replaced w/ silicone hoses, M2 downpipe and custom exhaust w/ 3" Stainless piping. I was wondering if this will be a good reliable setup for the car since i live in the oceanside and i go to Palm springs on the weekends all the time. Will this car be able to handle the heat? IM new at this car but i love the way it looks. Will this be a good reliable car? im posting this since im sure i will get a good and honest response from you guys. THANKS!

If you want a reliable 3rd gen, get one that is completely stock and do the reliability mods (or get one with them done already). The 3mm apex seals is your real problem because you are going to need another rebuild much sooner than with the stock seals.

how is that?! I've never heard that one before......you smokin? Anyways, it sounds like a good decent car with some reliability mods already done. Does it have an upgraded ecu? or any fuel upgrades, cause if not your gonna want to do that if you buy this car. Just make sure everythings in good condition. And the 3mm apex seals is one of the reliability mods, gonna be very hard to blow those seals. R&R is a good place, I'm sure they did a great job on the rebuild, Steve does good work. Good luck with the car dude.

Sounds like a good buy there. If you want to help it out beating the heat. Is by geting an upgraded radator such as a fluidline or koyo if it's not done allready. Doing an upgraded radator is another relibilty mod too.

yes, this is very true. He already has the AST upgraded too. an upgraded intercooler is a nice reliability mod too, but not really needed, but its always nice to have done anyways.

Yeah intercooler will help ya out too. Gives ya some more hp on top of that which is allways good. I've been meaning to upgrade mine. But for his area I would do the radator first bc hes wanting to keep cool on the hot cali. days.

talked to my uncle about the car since he visits this site often too. He mentioned that he knows somebody who is selling his rx7 and has all the reliability mods already. Only thing is that theres something wrong with the temp sensor. Is this an easy problem to fix? Please help a novice out.

If you want a reliable ride, buy a f-150. If you wantr the ride of your lifr, by a 3rd gen, but this car is by no means an easy relationship, it is love/hate in the most intense sense of .................................................

Bottom line, if you want a "reliable" car, get a Civic.
The FD is a pure sports car. It will have problems and will be rather expensive to repair when that happens.
If you are ok with that, then fine. Find the best FD for the amount of money you can spend and enjoy. If you are looking for a car that is not going to break on you, say goodbye to this forum.
I'm not trying to be harsh, but it's just reality. There are a few lucky FD owners that haven't had too many problems, however they are FAR in the minority.

Mahjik just summed it up for you man. The rx7 is a pure sports machine. It was built for the road and the weekend and was nothing else. If you can afford to spend a good few thousand in aftermarket products in the first 6 months, then go for it. If you don't mind changing the oil every 1500 miles then go for it. If you don't mind only being able to drive this car on dry pavement then go for it.
The Rx7 is many things, but is not reliable. Look around in the 3rd gen forum, 95% of the threads amde revolve around a problem with the car that the owner cannot seem to solve. If you want to jump up on the bandwagon, buy away. If you want reliability, stay away.

Man, scare the guy away!!
I wouldn't say that they are the most un-reliable car out there (I used to own a mustang) but you have to take care of them. Unlike with a Civic where you can miss your oil changes for 20k miles you have to keep up with the maintenance of an RX7, then it will be pretty darn stable. I drive mine to work every day, usually race some retard on the way!! Other then the oil change, it hasn't been in the shop for quite a while - months -
All you have to remeber is that it is a sports car pushed to its bleading edge of performance, there is no cushion for ignorant maintenance. If the engine light comes on, you fix it right them and there, you don't pretend that it isn't comming on. You change your oil every 1.5k miles, plugs every 10k and fuel filter every 10k. You look listen and learn, change your own oil, become an expert on it so you can fix all the small stuff without blowing a wad on a mechanic. Hell they are not that bad!! A friggen V-8 has a million additional parts that the RX7 doesn't have. There are no push-rods, cams, heads, lifters, balancers, just a really over-engineered vacume system - the shop manual is full of pictures and everything - easiest manual I have ever read!!
My advice, if you want one, buy one, get a friggen manual and look around for a decent mechanic that won't stick a wrench in your &%$ for simple stuff. If you get a Honda with a turbo you will do more work keeping that POS running anyhow. Well, that and Honda's don't attract the women like an RX7-------

Thanks for the Help people. I guess I will really have to wait if i want to get this car. Its a nice car. Fast and a very high performance car. I dont think Im ready for this kind of responsibility. Since i read so much about maintaing this car, I dont think i'll be able to afford this kind of car. Wish I could though. Maybe next year or so I will be able to afford it. Again, thanks a lot for your help to those who replied. Specially to Mahjik.
