Buy an RX-7??

Whats up all, I'm thinkin about buying an Rx-7. Just wanted to know some stats for the 93+ (I think, the new ones) models. I am looking at the twin turbo models. I am also looking at Golf 1.8T's. Any comments on that? Mistake? Good idea? Back your answer please Thanks for the help.

the Golf 1.8T is way too heavy.

its not even in the same class as an FD, nowhere near it.

oh, and JSYK I am a huge fan of the engineering of the 1.8t motor, I just wish they would stick two together and make the ultimate 3.6 litre twin turbo V8. or maby add 2 more cyllinders and make the ultimate 2.7 litre V/I6...... I just dont think any (piston) engine should be less than 2 litres

RX-7 > 1.8T
The answer is obvious.

If you do get the 1.8, get on of the 1500 337's that will be coming out. Mt 1st car was a '79 sirocco, so I have an affinity for the vw's. It's really apples to oranges though... You need to decide how much time you want to put into your ride.

I thought it ( the VW) was heavy when the guy said 3,000 pounds. I was just thinkin hatchback + 180 hp = Fun. But not if it weighs 3000 pounds. So tell me more about the RX-7, how can I buy the wrong? What hp do the twin turbos produce? How reliable are they? This my college car and I dont want it in the shop all the time.

Depends on the model of the Golf you are looking at. They seem to range from 2800-3000 lbs. The FD does make more power for about the same weight.

However, here are some things to consider:

* You can modify both cars to have some sick (in a good way sick) performance. However, the FD will already have a head start since it's already at 255 hp.

* The FD is just a pure sports car. Looks and performance.

* Golf, very dependable car.

If it's going to be your only car, IMO, I wouldn't recommend getting an FD. I would recommend the Golf (if that's your only other choice). If you have a second car, then by all means grab an FD.

You could get lucky and pick up a nice FD and never have any problems with it. Or you could get one plagued with problems and it spends every other week at the shop or you working on it. The answer of reliability will vary from owner to owner.

However, I will say this, you have to LOVE the car. The problems I've had with mine, I would have drove it of a cliff a long time ago if I didn't love the car.

Thanks for the info, by far the most helpful posts. And thanks for being honest about the reliability. This will be my only car. Well, realiability is key, so I'm leaning to the Golf. I would much prefer the Rx-7 for its sick power, but I don't need any probems. I know I should no longer be here, but what other cars do you all recomend, or what other cars were you looking at when you bought the 7's.

And whats an "FD"?

Oh, FD is part of the chassic code for the 3rd Generation RX-7. So, instead of saying "3rd Gen RX-7", people refer to the car as FD or FD3S.

As for other cars.... If you are looking for something fun, but sporty... Check cars like the 300zx or MR2's. I used to own a 300zx and really liked the car a lot. Granted, it's not a pure sports car, but it's still nice and sporty.

If you are going to get a Z and want reliability, get a N/A (non-turbo) model.

The cars are getting to be quite old, like the FD's, so if the turbos haven't been rebuilt or replaced, I'm sure they will need to be soon.

Even the N/A makes around 220 hp (at 3200 lbs) which is still quicker than most of the cars on the road. The turbo model makes around 300 hp (at around 3500 lbs).

I had the N/A model and in the 3 years I owned it, the only things I had to do were:

* New brake pads
* New battery

That was it.
