Busted Power steering fluid reservoir, need advice

Well as my dad was helping me change the spark plugs today, he accidently busted the nipple off of the power steering reservoir (Pics Here.) I've never had to mess with anything that had to do with the power steering system before, hence I turn to this board. I'm headed to the dealer tomorrow to pick up the part, all I believe I need is the reservoir itself because thats all that was damaged. Does anyone have any usefull info on getting it out/back in? How much do I fill it back up? Do I need to bleed the system somehow? What kind of PS fluid do you guys recommend? I was told it was going to squeak like hell until the air gets out, is that true?

Whatever you guys can give me is much appriciated, take a look at the pics and lemme know what you think.

BTW, I've got a Base model 93'

Didn't I change the plugs a couple months ago?

I've got a couple pumps with reservoirs sitting around, come over and I'll see if they come off. I've never had to take one off a pump before.

Use standard PS fluid, nothing special needed. Shouldn't need much bleeding at all. Fill to full line, start car and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times, that is all it needs. Shouldn't be any squeaking going on.

Doh, yeah I wasnt sure if you changed them or not. I was at Napa and just picked them up for the hell of it. It sounds like replacing only the reservoir is not an option, the whole pump needs to be replaced then? God, I dont even want to see what the dealer will charge for the whole damn thing. BTW, did you change the plug wires also?

BTW, Thanks for your prompt response Jeff; hows the R1? Any new projects?

Cheers, Derek

I think I put on new plug wires too. I usually do that sort of thing "while I'm in there". It is so easy to do while doing the hose job, etc.

I'm not saying that the reservior won't come off, probably will, I just haven't ever done anything like bustin' off a nipple.

I've got the Fikses on front and rear now. Recently picked up a M2 med IC and ECU too.

Got the white 94 running now, been driving it around for the past few weeks.

Let me check the pump to see how easy it is to get the reservoir off. BTW, dealer wants something like $1250 for a new PS pump. Used they go for $150-250.

Just went and checked, it looks like it comes off fairly easily. 1 hose and a few bolts. Might be easiest to pull the pump and do the swap on the bench rather than try to do it while the pump is in the car. Pulling the pump requires that the pulley comes off. Sometimes people break them when trying to pull them off. I haven't broken one yet but they are slightly fragile.

Yeah, it just seems like such a waste to replace the whole damn pump when all I need is a little piece of plastic. It wasnt hit very hard at all, The car was completely cold and it was damn near 20 degree's at the time, that probably didnt help. But yeah, if you could see how hard it is to seperate the reservoir, that would be great.

Are you going to run more boost through that thing now? BTW, if you come across a black FD for your next project, I know someone that is interested.

Cheers, Derek
